There will always been unintended concequenses with major rule changes, I think the one we are seeing now is the last 10 laps are a precession, mainly to save the engine for the next race

2. Nico Rosberg Mercedes +17.313s
3. Sebastian Vettel Red Bull-Renault +24.534s
4. Fernando Alonso Ferrari +35.992s
5. Nico Hulkenberg Force India-Mercedes +47.199s

Wasn't Hulk in front of Alonso with 10 laps to go?

Seeing now?
ever since the teams have been limited to a certain number of engines per year they have turned them down towards the end if they had a decent enough lead to be safe to do so, nothing new at all.

Entered expecting to see some cars well out of shape with heroic action from the cockpit.

Departed leaving rose-tinted glasses behind.
