The most optimistic driver going into the race will be Bernd Mayländer. He's regretting not having a contract for 2014 that pays him per lap.
There's every chance that not all cars will make it to the start. Several are unlikely to complete the first lap. Of those that manage to make it to the first round of pit stops, if by any miracle these include Renault engined cars, they will self combust within 3 seconds of being stationary.
I predict a Williams win with one or both drivers being given strict instructions to never use first, second or third gears, make one pitstop only and use of the brakes only in emergencies.

good point on the overheating at the pitstops. they were very good in previous years at keeping c ars cool sitting at the end of the pitlane etc for position. Will be interesting to see this yearThere's every chance that not all cars will make it to the start. Several are unlikely to complete the first lap. All of the Merc teams are looking fairly healthy. All had issues but stress testing and the like is probably going on. I can imagine the majority of the drivers finishing
Ferrari teams - the works team seem very on/off so hard to judge. Marussia are steadily making progress with reliability but don't seem that quick and Sauber seem to having a bit of a mare. Half of them finishing.
Renault teams? Caterham seem the most likely to finish but not quickly! Torro Rosso seem to have turned a corner but Lotus and Red Bull look decidedly iffy!
So...roughly...
2 Mercedes
2 McLaren
1 Williams
1 Force India
1 Ferrari
1 Sauber
1 Marussia
1 Caterham
1 Torro Rosso
0 Lotus
0 Red Bull

Monaco 1996 - only three finishers - Panis, Coulthard & Herbert
Wasn't Frentzen classified as a finisher but not actually running at the end? Could be wrong.I remember watching that. Biggest massacre ever and Coulthard somehow negotiated all of it. Unbelieveable.
I expect there will be some cynically long pit-stops.
If the attrition rate is as high as many seem to expect, then surely some cars will pit after a couple of laps. They'll then spend ages trying to fix the problem before miraculously returning to the circuit a couple of laps before the end.
It could be entirely possible to pick up points (maybe even a podium) with having done only a few laps.

Do they not have to complete 90% race distance of the winner to be classified? If anyone is 6 laps behind then they aren't counted.
That creates the tantalising possibility of a race in which not all of the available points get awarded, because fewer than 9 cars finish within the appropriate percentage of the winner's time/distance covered.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
