F1 a sport where you can support everyone?
Discussion
Is it just me that doesn't really have strong allegiances to a single team/driver in F1? To me it's always been a sport where i have preferences on who i like, but never a strong idea of just supporting one team or driver. It's also always been a sport where i like to support a team that's at the back
(it used to be Minardi, but i think i'm warming to Marussia a little now...!).
So for me it's like this...
Top team fav: Mclaren
Mid team fav: Williams
Back marker team fav: Marussia
A bit of a random thread i know...

I was at Club on qualifying period, when Mansell was in a Judd-powered, naturally aspirated Williams, going up against the turbocharged rockets. You could see the reaction from those around Stowe and we knew he was on a special lap. He came round Club on the limit, and a bit beyond. It was incredible. Almost everyone, regardless of affinity, cheered, and continued to do so until we got the time posted and then we cheered some more, except louder. If memory serves, he was at that time second on the grid.
I was, and remain, a McLaren supporter, but it was great to be at Club with everyone impressed by such a committed lap.
I really like the fact that you can stand anywhere with anyone and chat about the sport, your driver/team, and get polite and interesting comment. I like the fact that you can take the mickey out of any team/driver if they make a mistake.
Edited to add: except Ecclestone of course.

I used to be a massive Jordan fan, it was the fun element, and also I'm Irish. I think the sport lost something the day the team was sold.
These days I just enjoy the racing for what it is. I reckon Alonso is the best on the current grid, but is frustrated at the lack of a decent car from Ferrari, as a result cracks are starting to show.
Will cheer on any team/driver who I think is punching above their weight, or is simply racing hard.

I remember Andrea de Chesaris being cheered after putting on a good show. Earlier on in the season he'd done well at Monaco before crashing out.He crashed out at Silverstone one year in front of us when going well and got a great deal of sympathetic applause. He was obviously irritated by his mistake and just sat on a wall near to us for some minutes, much to the irritation of the marshals. When he got up to leave he got another round of clapping and when it stopped one bloke yelled out: 'You were a bit of a pillock, though'. And AdC gave him a wave.
But he was a dreadful driver most of the time.
Prior to Lewis turning up I was like that, I had cheered for Button for years, but I had the feeling in the early years he gave up faster cars for better pay packets and later when Honda lost the plot his "I'll do my best, but don't expect much" speech prior to every race made me think he'd never win, so why bother and I was never a Coulthard Fan, as a driver anyway.
So I became an unbiased spectator and, frankly it bored me to tears, so I usually slept off a hangover to it, back in those days if you watched the first corner you'd see 99% of the action get an hour or two of sleep and watch the end.
Then Lewis Hamilton arrived and decided not to follow the unwritten rule about not being able to overtake in modern F1 and had a massive season fighting Fernando, then he won the WDC in the dying seconds the year after, then Brawn and Button went from zero to hero and suddenly we had two contenders to cheer for and I've loved it ever since.
Yes, when it comes to sports I'm pretty nationalistic, and yes I love a bit of pantomime ideally with crashes - but Lewis Hamilton saved F1 for me, and his arrival coincided with actual, wheel to wheel racing and overtaking.

Yep. The only sport I follow closely is F1. I have no overwhelming strong allegiance to any team. I simply enjoy the sport as a whole. It is perhaps a little more satisficing when one of one's favoured teams or drivers do well.
This year, it would be good if Williams was to bounce back and I would dearly love to see either Caterham or Marussia score some points.

One reason I love motor sport - and not just F1 by any means (which possibly puts me in a minority ) - is that it isn't infected by the same knuckle dragging tribalism that infect most team games (in which I have zero interest ). I 'll confess to liking some drivers more than others- Revson ,Peterson, Lauda, Alesi ,D. Hill, Sato and Button for example - but as long as it's a good race I don't care who wins. I remember seeing some clod waving two fingers at Senna at Silverstone , thanks to The Sun's 'support our Noige ' drivel and despairing . I couldn't give a hoot for pit stop strategy, fuel management , Hamilton's f**ing tweets or tyre conservation- all I want to see are two drivers slugging it out to see who brakes first .
I usually shout for the Brits but cannot stand Hamilton. I feel he behaves like a spoiled petulant child, or thats my take on things. Mind you his father and his miserable face skulking about the pits doesn't help matters.
As I'm a jock DC was a fave and PdR too, but Button now as he seems quite mature compared to his younger years of contract jockeying....
Teams wise, Williams and McLaren are the one I shout for.
