Modern Formula 1 is artificial - Jacques Villeneuve
Discussion
Yes, and he's right about the solution to it being boring is to make it more and more artificial. Introduce one gimmick and when that becomes tiresome you can't just take it away you have to replace it with a bigger gimmick. In TV circles it's known as jumping the shark.
So I agree with him in principle but actually I've enjoyed the last few seasons and am excited about it getting going again next month.

Wow. Thanks. I think that stating the simple truth that F1 can never be green is the most important point. The FIA should have gone head over heels to get people into watching and understanding ŴEC, especially Le Mans, to promote genuine competition and what can be achieved with current hybrid technology.
Instead they emasculate F1 and introduce phoney Formula E. Who will ever want to buy into electric car technology if you show everyone that you need a second car to complete the race distance. I thought that Todt would make a difference, I just wrongly assumed that it would be positive.
As for getting kids interested, wrong again WRX or even monster trucks seems to capture their imagination. Any sport that becomes slower year-on-year, is bound to fail.

Speed doesn't matter. They have been fast. And are still fast. Really fast. What it needs is excitement and (perceived) risk.People enjoy seeing someone dice with other competitors, and/or the laws of physics. F1 however is chess on wheels, and looks like it could be done 1/2 asleep with one hand on the wheel.
Take away the aero and grip, add power, they'll be slower around a lap, but wayyyyyy more fun to watch.
Whilst his comments have relevance, there is a slightly amusing irony that he choses the launch of his career in Rallycross to do this; Rallycross being a branch of motorsport created purely for TV audiences.
I used to marshall rallycross events and did a few 'TV' meetings and quite often had to re-run heats if they didn't look exciting or close enough!
So, nothing artificial there then!

Thanks I forgot the important bit.. I don't want green F1 cars, I want everything on the verge of exploding, 100% attack %100 of the time. 1000 BHP V10 engines with manual gearboxes, slick tyres, big wings and wheel to wheel racing around properly dramatic backdrops.
If F1 has a conscience, it should spend its vast wealth on carbon offset programmes, not turning the cars into single seat Honda Jizz hybrids.
I won't be watching this year, it's just tedious now. There are better races between reps in the Hatfield tunnel.

He might be right, he might be wrong, but one fact for certain is Jacques Villeneuve is a tt.
He has his moments but I like Villeneuve, mostly because he doesn't mince his words and says it how he sees it. Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
