Eddie Irvine, remember him, sent down for six months for fighting. Source

Fight was 5 years ago, and hard to believe that Eddie is 48

Being Italy as Berlusconi has shown he will probably never serve time. Sad to see the case though.

This report seems to suggest the case is not finished yet http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/... and the other party may have different questions to answer.

Interesting they mention his 1999 season when Nigel Roebuck was writing about it a couple of weeks ago:

Suspended sentences, according to this, so jail time is unlikely.

Eddie Irvine.
A man who cannot help but come across as a knob in the media but also a man who has clearly lived the life.

Indeed. That would have been almost a bigger injustice had Hill won the 94 WDC... but that's another story;)

Hill not winning was the injustice that season.

Oh go then I'll bite. (but only because talking about EI isn't really worth the effort).

Yes of course MS knew his car was fked, and yes he went for a gap that he knew DH would close and that they would would probably collide.... but.....

1/ DH really should have been a bit wiser to MS

2/ My Mum could have won the WDC in that Williams

3/ You might what to check the history of that season and make note from how many races MS was actually allowed to race in

Yes I know you will disagree with me, but I'm sure we can agree that in the context of racing drivers DH is nowhere near MS.

DH didn't spend his entire career deliberately pranging into anyone who might beat him.

Your last line is undoubtedly correct. DH was never in the league of MS, Few have been although I personally think Senna and Fangio certainly were and probably Jim Clark possibly Jackie Stewart and Nuvolari. The greatest racer ever IMO never won the World Championship. Stirling Moss.

Disagree with point 2.

Newey has said that the car was a bd to drive up until the French gp when they shortened the side pods. Apparently it was very very unstable until that point. Senna, Hill and CoulthArd did extremely well to get that performance out of a very difficult car.

Other than that, the FIA was so bent that season the title was decided before any racing had taken place.

I think the fact that it killed the best driver of his era due to dodgy handling (or a broken steering column if you insist, but I doubt it) tells you how good the car was in the beginning of 94.

There was no justice available that year, the best driver was gone. . . Hill was gifted some extra points due to Schumis exclusions & Benetton were cheating. . . anyone care to disagree ?

NO.

I think you pretty much nailed it.

"In a statement, the Northern Irish driver completely ignored the recent news and just went on and on about how brilliant he is."

But he is brilliant! Fighting off sharks don't cha know.

(sliiightly out of date, but as it involves sharks, spears and Irvine it deserves to be posted.)

Eddie Irvine sort of passed me by in his day, it was a period of F1 when I wasn't watching much, but I saw an interview with him on Sky at the weekend, he doesn't come across well... to sum up he said:

I never had a car good enough to a WDC, although in the hands of Michael it could win a WDC.

I was never the second driver, but I followed team orders which were often to let Michael go past.

I never had any orders to let Michael past at the starts - it's a little known fact Michael has the slowest reactions in F1 so I could beat him off the line easy, but I used to let him pass me.

Michael has unearthly talent, he was the greatest driver in F1 (because he beat me) although, he had the worst reactions of any driver, couldn't set a car up and can't drive slow corners.

I'm not sure what he was drinking, but the level of his glass moved up and down constantly throughout so I guess was being refilled between questions which might explain why he seemed to contradict himself so much.

You are one of the few he did pass in his time.

He was there for the lifestyle. He enjoyed himself but was hardly the most committed driver ever to grace the grid.
