says Webber here http://www.planetf1.com/driver/13286/9072419/-Hami...

He's probably right, but Lewis didnt do too bad in the same car as Alonso.

The problem is that Lewis excels in a car he can lean on without having to worry about tyres wearing out, if Pirelli go very conservative with tyres next year he is likely to do better.

I think Lewis has to sort his private life out, he seems to be more interested in celebrity than racing sometimes and that daft bint of his doesn't seem to help.

Good on his day though and as it's been said these ridiculous tyres don't help.

PlanetF1 article...

BUT!
Remove the ridiculous headline & I would say that the BBC interview with Webber is a fair reflection on the abilities of the top drivers within the current rules of F1.

A 2014 plan for Hamilton:
1) Hope that the Merc engine is a beauty.
2) Hope that the Merc chassis is a beauty.

If he has the above, baring any team or tactical errors he has the ability to take the fight to anybody.
Everything else should slot into place (including personal life issues!), despite having some of his skills removed due to DRS/KERS/TYRES.

Hamilton hasn't really impressed since his first season with Alonso imo. He hasn't been much (if any) faster than his recent team mates, Button and Rosberg, neither of whom are particularly great (I know Button is a former WDC, but that was the year the Brawn was massively faster than the competition for at least half the season), whereas both Vettel and Alonso have completely dominated their respective team mates.

I tend to agree. I've been, and still am a huge Lewis fan (of his driving), but just don't think his reached his full potential, and I don't think he ever will.

He'll definitely go down for me as a 'what it' driver.

I've got a similar opinion to this, but he's still got a decade to turn it round so you never know what could happen. It's a shame that we never get to see the best drivers in the world in equal machinery.

I agree with what Webber says there. I think Hamilton is as fast or maybe faster than those two but struggles to keep his head in check. His car control is sublime though, I loved watching him on Top Gear, he gets the car turned in with this tiny hint of oversteer which he almost seems to be correcting before it happens. Just stunning to watch.

I agree. It Lewis's 'distractions' that worries me. You know that Seb & Alonso eat, drink, sleep F1 and being the best driver in F1 which you don't quite get with Lewis.

Seb's dominance, driving for Merc is a humbling experience for him. You can't just to expect wins handed to him on a plate through natural talent alone, its more than that.

Kinda a shame since Senna is his hero and he the greatest desire of them all.

As above really. The lads got head issues. He needs to focus on the driving and the team if he wants to improve. He's too busy wondering what people think of him, trying to impress bouncy, and focusing on the negatives.

I suspect he misses the firm guidance of his dad which helped him succeed. Some other figure needs to step in and tell him what's the right thing to do out of the car. Because he's not doing it on his own.

I agree with some of what's been said, however he's the only driver of the three where he's not been the outright no.1 driver. By that I mean the teams have said that there is no no.1 and both treated equally.

You only have to see the effect it has on a driver to be given the 100% backing of the team.

Alonso is obvious. Sebastian is obvious.

Look at Renault. Kimi when team leader was ahead of Grosjean, as soon as Kimi fell out with the team and Grosjean was getting all the attention he was consistently ahead.

I agree, Lewis's problem is in his head. Just listen to some of the radio messages over the season when things have not gone his way. He seems to have been brought up to believe that HE is the best. Being with the Shirtz has messed up his head, wanting to be a celebrity is as much an ambition as being good at F1. His driving can be brilliant, when his head is in the right place.
He has, at times had a little chip on his shoulder too.

The regulations have changed and neutered his two advantages:

1. Overtaking when other people can't (DRS)
2. Driving really fast (have to look after tyres so pace is equalised between drivers in races)

Hamilton beat alonso in the same car, he won probably the most dominant victory for 20 years (silverstone 2008). Sadly the meat of his career has coincided with regulations that take away his main advantages.

Perhaps... But I recall watching Hamilton try for lap after lap to overtake Schumi without success, only to watch Button do it in one move.
Lewis can put in some great performances with a "chuckable" car; F1 doesn't really offer those any more. Lewis vs Senna or Giles Vileneuve (in period) would have been fascinating to watch, however.

That headline really doesn't reflect what Webber is quoted as having said in the text.

It's a reasonable guess but, in all honesty, I hadn't a clue what he was saying.........

I looked at entropy's profile in case he was from another country. Northants, so not too far off.

It would certainly be interesting to see the three of them in the same car - ideally a backmarker - and see how they got on.
