I heard Maldonado has already called dibs on 69 - so that when he inevitably rolls the car you can still read his number...

I think it should be retired. I know that it was used after Gilles died, but I´d prefer if it wouldn´t be available for today´s drivers.

I always associate 7 with S.Moss, so hope nobody chooses that.

Do I recall Jean Alesi's Ferrari wearing no 27 back in the day?

-#7 is a quite a popular number, if it hasn't already been picked before Buttons turn, I'd perhaps tip him to take it.

Assuming Vettel will be plumping for #1, do we know if he will also get to choose his 'normal-number' before anybody else, to sit in reserve incase (gawd forbid) he doesn't win the title again?

The drivers are being asked in the order that they finished the 2013 championship to choose their numbers, so Vettel is the first driver to get to choose his number from 2-99, Alonso will get the next pick, then Hamilton and so on.

Vettel can then choose to either run his chosen number OR #1 for the 2014 season. If he decides to use #1 then his chosen permanent number will not be re-allocated to anyone else. If Vettel then doesn't win the 2014 championship he will use his chosen number in 2015.

Villeneuve used number 12 more than any other number, Jean Alesi used it 4 times, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996.

Villeneuve's numbers
1977 10/17
1978 12
1979 12
1980 2
1981 27
1982 27 (5 weekends only)

Edited to add - Michele Alboreto used number 27 for 5 seasons, 1984,1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 seasons.

It will make no difference to me as I can never make out the numbers anyway, I have to go by the roll bar or helmet colour to differentiate the drivers in any team. Bikes are even worse IMO as the stupid fonts many of them use make it even more difficult for spectators.
In the olden days rolleyes when I raced bikes you had a specific background colour depending on class, I raced 350s mainly so it was blue, and a specific colour, either white or black for the numbers depending on the background, the size was regulated and the scruts made sure they were legible.

I know in the days of mega sponsorship it is more important to cram as much advertising as possible on the cars and bikes, but I doubt I am the only one unable to read the numbers.

Same here - which is why I get cheesed off when drivers such as Vettel keep changing their helmet designs.
