Staying in Lake Como for Italian GP - Is it Doable?
Discussion
We're thinking of going to Monza next year and combining it with a stay in the Lakes. Can anyone offer any advice on this?
Looking at the transport options on www.muoversi.regione.lombardia.it/planner/home.do
it would appear to be 22 minutes by boat from Bellagio to Varenna-Esino from where I believe we could get a direct train to Monza taking 49 minutes. How long is the walk from Monza station to the circuit
Also does anyone have any recommendations for places to stay in either Bellagio or Menaggio near to where the boat docks?
Any advice greatly appreciated - thanks

Sounds a great trip, I did both but not on the same day and didn't use public transport. It really is a beautiful place.

Yes, no traffic = less than an hour.
Some of the F1 people stay here

(Senna used to stay there when at Monza).

It's very doable, in fact that's exactly what we did at this years race.
We went out on Tuesday afternoon (Easyjet to Malpensa), stayed at the Ibis (very nice) in Milan that night and caught the train (changing at Monza ironically) up to Como the next day (had a free day to explore Como on the Wednesday).
Went all 4 days (pit walk, practice, quali and race). We caught the train down from Como each day, it's takes 40 minutes and is frequent and there's a less frequent 20 minute train, but that fell in with our plans so we got that 3 out of 4 days. Commuting into Monza from that direction means the trains are much less crowded than the Milan direction.
Trains back to Como are just as frequent, we never waited more than 20 minutes.
Tips would be
You need San Giovanni station in Como not Como Nord (trains from Nord don't stop at Monza).
The local bus from Monza station to the track is the 221, easier to get on that the free shuttle buses and drops you closer to the track, or just share a cab with another couple as we did several times. You could easily walk from the station to the track, it would take around 50 minutes and would be a very pleasant walk through a very pretty town.
We stayed in a lovely apartment in central Como about a 15 minute walk from San Giovanni station and Como is a place lovely to eat and drink in the evening (it's gorgeous anytime actually).

I did exactly that a couple of years ago, stayed in a lovely hotel on the edge of Como, right beside the lake and travelled to the race every day.
I used a company called grandstand motorsports for the whole trip, and they (a lovely young blonde!) picked us up form the airport (malpensa) and dropped us off at the hotel that we had arranged with them. They then organised transport to and from the track every day for us as well on a nice, posh small coach which dropped off us right near one of the entrances everyday, and then had a meeting point of a local bar in the evening for collection......
Great trip and ran perfectly!

Lake Como is beautiful. I've not stayed there for the GP but did take a trip to Monza for the day. Granted, we drove which you woulnt want to do on GP weekend but it's not more than an hour drive so train would be easy.
we stayed in a s/c apartment which was ideal, but try to stay near one of the larger villages around the lake as this is were the places to eat and drink are.
a self hire boat into the middle of the lake is a must too for a spot of swimming. bliss

We stayed in Trezzone this year which is right at the top of Lake Como. Leaving for the track for General Admission on the Sunday meant leaving at 5am. Journey was traffic free though, free parking is plentiful in Monza if you don't mind a 20 minute walk to the track.
We were stuck in loads of traffic on the Friday as we didn't leave til quite late, but it was ok as we were stuck next to Eric Boullier who was in a lovely Exige S.
We stayed at this place : http://www.homeaway.co.uk/p472211 was a lot better than I thought, had spectacular views.
Regarding budget, ours cost very little, flights were £80 from Gatwick to Malpensa, then the house for a week was £300 and £300 again for rental car, both of these were split between 5 of us.
