It was reported last week that he can't announce anything until at least September due to a clause in his Red Bull contract.

Ah, I missed that.

I haven’t got the link to hand but Clarkson told (trolled?) Dutch media he knows Adrian Newley is house shopping in Oxfordshire.

Perhaps he is buying a house there but it has nothing to do with work plans... For the most part he can work wherever he wants I would think.

Or perhaps it's just a rumour, equal to the rumour that his wife was caught viewing houses in Maranello! Maybe both are true, or neither..

For me, I lean strongly towards believing he's done the deal with Ferrari already. It feels right, it makes sense and they have just parted company with their existing TD with zero notice period, which I assume is because he has acknowledged to them that he's off to AM as suspected so they wanted to cut him out of anything at Ferrari immediately.

Might he go to Ferrari and also buy a nice new house in the UK? No reason why not... with or without Clarkson's comment, I would have assumed he'd maintain a UK home and lifestyle anyway. There's no reason that shouldn't be a new home or second home in the UK.

But mostly there's Lewis grinning like a buffoon when asked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WciDBCIWsxk

Note the rest of the reporters chuckling when Lewis says "we'll see" towards the end of the video.

Lance was grinning too though when asked a few races back.

I'd say the biggest signal is Lewis would only join Ferrari if they guaranteed Newey.

I bet Hamilton's contract let's him walk away if Newey isn't there.

Lewis would sign for Ferrari no matter what, Newey for most of Lewis career has not been dominant, James Allison has been the best designer over the last 10 years or so, and is proving his worth again after stepping away for a while.

You might be over egging the pudding a bit, but Allison is underrated with an excellent track record. No surprise Mercedes have found their way again now he's back. He also seems a thoroughly nice chap.

Ferrari certainly missed him when he had to leave. He comes across as a very genuine guy.

Cardile to AM was suggested before, and it’s unlikely that they would be hiring two superstar car designers - which in theory leaves Newey to Ferrari as the obvious missing piece of the jigsaw.

Newey’s always been a bit of a lone worker anyway, sitting in his own studio with his old-fashioned drawing board as much as the RB office in recent years. I’m sure a deal could be done that doesn’t involve him living in Italy full-time, although Ferrari did once try and open a British design office back in the John Barnard days, but changed their mind about running two centres after the inevitable communication issues. It might be easier now that they all have Teams and Webex though.

Oh yeah, and Lewis with the massive Cheshire Cat grin when asked about working with Newey. He’s not very good at hiding his emotions, and from his reaction and that of the hacks around him, we can expect that there’s at least strong rumours of a deal having been done.

Maybe he’s going to Alpine. New engine deal with Merc, a fresh slate and a chance to work with Flávio

Yep, I'm sure Briatorie is exactly the kind of person who Newey would like to work with!

Have I missed this? I thought that Alpine were considering their PU future, but not that any announcement had been made.

Out of the Red Bull frying pan, and into the Alpine fire.

The term 'technical director' is a wide one in F1 teams. Newey kind of floats at the top of the structure but within it you can have various titles. For example Pierre Wache is the Red Bull 'technical director' and Newey 'Chief technical officer'.

Cardile going to AM doesn't make Newey following him any more or less likely IMO.

Tongue firmly in cheek. I believe they are, but are interested in Mercedes.

Cardile will become chief technical officer of Aston, sitting above technical director Dan Fallows. That doesn't seem to leave any room for Newey to slot into.

The fact that Ferrari have let him go with so little notice and minimal gardening leave suggests they already have a replacement lined up. If they were going with an internal promotion they would likely have announced it already, so the lack of announcement can only really mean it's an external hire, with the announcement kept under wraps for contractual reasons with their current employer.

I have the impression Cardile is the Ferrari version Wache and Newey's role is largely to provide ideas and IP rather than be line manager for the day to day of the design team.

On that basis I'd expect Ferrari to need a replacement in Cardile's role irrespective of Newey.

On the other hand the titles and roles can be opaque, so who knows.
