True, but there must be a ton of oil subsidy in that.
How many GP are self funded, as opposed to those that are government subsidised?
10:

Australia
Japan
Emilia-Romagna
Canada
Austria
GB
Hungary
Belgium
Netherlands
Italy
US (Austin)
Brazil

Some of these may receive support from the relevant local government but this differs to the likes of Azerbaijan where the national government is the local promotor and is not worried about the event turning a profit or even just covering its costs.

The British GP is, I believe, unique in being the only race that is entirely self sufficient receiving no support from any government institution. This is due to its location. Those attending the race either arrive on the day, camp at the circuit or stay in hotels dispersed across four or five counties. There is very little directly attributable economic benefit to Northamptonshire County Council or others close by in having the race there so there is no motivation to them to support it. Whereas for Melbourne, the city itself benefits hugely from the race which justifies the local government supporting it to the level that they do.

If ever they were to build a circuit at the Olympic Park in Stratford (as was once touted), it's almost certain the Mayor of London would invest heavily in it because there would be direct economic benefit to London.....not least of which being the additional income from ULEZ smile

Lewis was asked to comment.

They're not going to like this.

Well of course he's absolutely right.

I'd happily pop down to Silverstone for the race on Sunday, but you're looking at £500+ for a seat. That's just too much for me. £309 for one day general admission is ridiculous.

I last went to the GP in 2014 and it was I think £200ish for the weekend general admission.

Thanks. As I expected, it's mostly the 'traditional' races that largely support themselves. While the 'new' races are countries using F1 to boost their profile on the global stage.

Austin was initially funded and supported by the Texas state, to the tune of $25m/ year. It has reduced (I think) with a model based on increased tax revenues generated by the race.

Cheapest seat (still available) for Sunday is £489. Don't think there's any much cheaper than that.

You want a seat on the pit straight for the weekend... £839 yikes

Hasn't Silverstone reduced some of the best GA views of the track in recent years by adding new stands and buildings?

Silverstone had the road improvements paid for by the govt, that's it

Build it and they will come, or something like that.

Silverstone's problem is that it's always been the other way round. They're here, we better build something.

My father was a BRDC member at the time the lease was taken on from the RAC and always felt that it was a mistake, and that it needed to be in the hands of a purely commercial organisation.

Without Government subsidy, the capacity needs to be drastically increased for ticket prices to fall. That would require substantial investment. I'm not sure the local infrastructure could cope. The only alternative is for it to move to London - but I doubt it's at the top of the current Mayor's list of tourism ideas.

Makes my trip to Le Mans last week look like a bargain, £1250 for Entry, Grandstand opposite the pits, pre-erected tent in a private site for 5 days

There's something off here about people saying that Silverstone isn't a good circuit and other people saying that Qatar or Abu Dhabi can be done for the same cost hehe

Silverstone is a world class circuit. It often produces great Grands Prix. I bet the atmosphere is great. Sure I'd prefer it to be cheaper...

How are the tents? Are we talking about 6ftx3ft and no room to swing a cat or a decent size?

Early doors to make predictions I know, but we could have four different cars all on the pace this weekend.

I don’t think I’m reading too much into this, but Perez’s English is not that bad, is it.
Or do they have a front wing cheat device cum gizmo that’s activated by the pedal?

Perez: "Is there anything wrong with the front pedal? We are understeering too much."

Engineer: "We'll have a talk in the garage."

Yeah, that was a weird little conversation. What’s a ‘front pedal’, and what are they doing with it?

Adjustment to suspension stiffness or geometry?

Autosport have quoted that as throttle pedal, not front pedal. smile
