We've had one wet qualifying this season. Verstappen lined up behind Norris and Hamilton.
Hamiltons last wet pole was 2020?

Max has had (I think) 5 wet pole positions since? whistle

Or you content basing your appraisal on a sample size on one? tongue out

Sorry, what did? Being 1.8m wide? How wide were they prior to that?
A 1982 ground effect car is 2.15m wide.

My point was that when the track was wet and therefore we had the very unusual situation of others having a chance, Verstappen was not the fastest.

It doesn't matter particularly that it was Norris and Hamilton who were ahead of him

They're about the same width, just longer
In 2004 F1 cars were 1800mm wide, now they're 2000mm, so 200mm or approx 8". Two cars trying t pass each other need 16" more track width, that's quite a lot.
They're about to get 110mm narrower and 150mm shorter, the start of a longer reaching reduction in size apparently.

It's important to not the reduction in length as well as width, because the two combine to determine how easy it is to pass on a tight circuit.

Also worth keeping in mind that the modern cars are now, and will remain, easier to pass in terms of air flow disturbance. Add in what is soon to be a big fat lump of all electric power that can be deployed, vs another driver who might well not have the same power to keep them safe, we could see some very commanding passes on tighter street circuits.

When I say 'should', I mean, presumably that's what the hope is of the new era of regs incoming.

I doubt most viewers are currently aware of just how different the cars will be in terms of performance and power usage post 2026, the art of F1 racing is about to change quite dramatically and comparisons to the past, including the past cars, will count for very little.

Vettel was shoved aside as soon as Ricciardo looked quicker, Ricciardo was forced out as soon as Verstappen looked quicker.

If another driver came into Red Bull and looked quicker than Max, the team will back them.

Controversial opinion: I enjoyed the race. For me, it was fascinating watching the teams manage the gaps back to the pit stops and it's thrilling seeing how close they can get to the barriers lap after lap.

Yes, I'd hate it if every race was like that but there's room on the calendar for 1.
In the race, they are entire seconds per lap off the potential pace of the cars. The only way a driver could hit a barrier realistically would be to lose concentration from the boredom of not pushing.
Or if there is a K-Mag nearby.

Haha, true. He really is a liability.

Point is moot given it's a sample size of one, did you apply that to Turkey 2020? hehe

The McLaren MP4/4 was 2134mm wide.

Ah right, I just hit on a year, hadn't realised they were wider, then shrunk and then grew again... Although I've watched F1 since the mid '60s wink

Thanks. I'm just picking it up on ITV+1 beer

Record has picked up a series link, so there could be more than one programme. smile

Thanks. Double good news. Mrs Pingu spotted the programme was on, and she'd recorded it, which was lucky as ITV+1 seems to be transmitting a 16:9 programme in 4:3, which makes the cars very tall and thin...

idea is there a way to 4:3 the cars, but leave the circuit in 16:9? smile

wow, mindblowing!
Pretty much exactly the same as road cars
You have to find a pretty big road car to match the size of an F1 car.

And they’re actually another 100mm longer again now!

I've not see a Chevrolet Suburban on our roads but being American I assume it's pretty big!

Sounds good, more overtaking. biggrin
Following Monte tonight was "No room for Error" behind the scenes of entrants on the TT with half devoted to the sidecars.
IIRC? It was last years lap record breaking race. Got to admire them, respect. Another episode on tomorrow night same time.
May be of interest.
