Not car related but I wish to have a rant!
I very rarely watch Survivor on ITV but have done so this evening.
It was ironic to me that the main reasons for the girl being voted off the island by the other tribes people were that she was the outstanding tribes person and therefore a direct threat to one of their lesser selves winning the ultimate £1,000,000 prize.
Apply this same philosophy to Local Councils, Political Parties and Government etc etc and it is obvious why we are led, ruled and controlled by a bunch of effing idiots.

A similar thing happened a while back on Weakest Link. An ex-Mastermind champion was on and didn't get a single question wrong. But, he was voted out of the last three as he was too much of a threat to the two other 'normal' mortals. More evidence of this country preferring mediocrity?
Its competition for gods sake , what are they supposed to do roll over and play dead , just because the other cometitor is better (has better equipment)than you should not mean you dont use all - any means to beat them , for example J.P.Montoya put up a fight even though he is up against a more expierienced and better equiped Schumacher
What worries me is that the current crop of gameshows are legitimising the use of schadenfreude (sp?) - the enjoyment of others misfortune, and even the generation of a rival's misfortune. Is this how our socety gets it's kicks? Not too long before we get Rollerball, Logan's run type gameshows, where death is the outcome. What sort of sickness affects our morals?
What happened to excellence as a means of winning? I don't reckon the ability to cheat, or exploit weakness, is anything to be celebrated or rewarded.
As for the Montoya example, F1 might be better served by making it effectively a single marque series, by strictly controlling power outputs and settings, even using the same rules as BTCC so the result of winning is a weight penalty for the next race. Then driver talent will be paramount, not the amount of resources available to a team. We might even get some proper racing in F1!!

quote:IMO the media have been in the business of promoting schadenfreude for as long as there have been paper/radio/TV media over which to purvey this nonsense. After all, how come there's a German word for it if it was only first perpetuated by Anne Robinson et al? It seems intrinsic to human nature.

The sooner we give the competitors of Gladiators chainsaws and Dog-Eat-Dog/Man-o-Man contestants get Uzis, the sooner I'll start watching that shit... Identify the morons.. put them on telly and then let them bludgeon each other to death. Now that I'd watch!
quote:Excellence as a means of winning was only ever popular amongst high-thinkers - that's why it was born out of Greek philospohy... but I doubt whether Gengis Khan, Atilla, Nero, The Christian Pilgrims etc had winning through excellence at the front of their minds and nor did those over whom such victories were won.

In short, IMO, winning through excellence is a high concept that is incompatible with the baser human instinct. Winning at all costs more like it!
Did I mention that humanity is a big disappointment to me?

More evidence of gameshows that allow Machiavellian principles to flourish i.e. where "political expediency is placed above morality and the use of craft and deceit to maintain the authority and carry out the policies of a ruler." No sense of fair play.
You know...something oddly familiar there...can't quite put my finger on it...

Ahh come on get real , Berni Ecclethump will never allow that to happen, i have read in the past most experts belive that a ban on carbon brakes would increase braking distance`s there for reintroduce over taking - out braking as in "The good old days" but guess what , there is 1 supplier of carbon brakes , and His Berniness is a director - shareholder , same thing go`s for Brands , much more interesting circuit than silverstone ok it needs a lot of work done on it ,once again who has a vested interest ,,,,, yup thats right
I have to say chaps that there are at least 3 suppliers of carbon brakes and Williams very recently tried the latest steel rotors and found that braking distances were the same as the carbon with much increased pedal feel. However the steel stuff was obviously a lot heavier and unsprung mass etc etc.
F1 is the way it is because the aerodynamics don't work in 'dirty air' so you can't follow people closely, the mechanical grip is low compared to the downforce generated grip consequently the cars are v. difficult to drive 'on the limit'. All of which adds up to a series where the driver would rather not risk overtaking, performed on tracks which have very few opportunities to do so any case.

Yes, but F1 has always been more than just the driver. It has always been the best car & driver combination. Unfortunately in recent years the car has become more important, but that's no reason to 'throw the baby out with the bath water' and make the cars identical. It would be just another formula then.
Nobody likes leaders or being told what to do any more. Remember the TV programme about the Anglo Saxon village? It was a complete farce because the elected 'leader' was too democratic, asking everybody what they wanted to do and being awfullt nice, instead of just saying 'X gets the water, Y grows the corn' etc. It descended into mutiny. Sometimes a real leader is required.
G Khan.
