An idea from the other thread, would it be an idea to have a sticky thread with a list of PH recommended "real" mechanics? Bit like the layout of the bike ownership thread on biker banter.

Separated into regions, it would at least give some of us a fighting chance to find a garage that is

a) Recommended by people that know about cars

b) Has competant mechanics that don't just rely on "plug and play" engine diagnostics alone

c) Could save everyone a lot of time (including the likes of me!) where garages turn down a car because there is no fault code, therefore they can't be arsed to diagnose it.

Good idea or bad?

Yes I think its a good idea, would come in handy. But surely the bad garages out there would be named and shamed as well as the good ones being recommended a praised?

I think the only safe way round it would be that it could only be a praising thread.

I know that everyone has had a bad experience at a garage where everyone else thinks is great (I for one think that certain nationwide chains of auto centres are all appalling and should be shut down immediately, but there are some PH's that have had good experiences with them amazingly)

If a garage is truly atrocious, then nobody will have had a bad experience and it won't go on the list. (hopefully!)

Personally, I think it's an excellent idea. I'm lucky in that I have an excellent garage (father/son outfit, both 'proper' mechanics, work on an array of old and new stuff. And very nicely priced to boot smile). However, going by anecdotes both online and from people I know I'm one of the lucky few, so to have something like this would be extremely useful.
