Ford Probe's - these seem cheap now
Discussion
GOOD.
Cheap, relatively comfortable and the V6 is a nice smooth engine. Best gearchange out of any car I have driven (that includes loads of cars with good changes such as Elises, S2000s and a Ferrari or two). Big enough boot if I remember my dads one right. Think the front end looks really good.
BAD.
Flimsily built, loads of chassis flex, not the best built, not the greatest handling, bootlid too heavy for the strut. Relatively hard to insure and the V6 is a bit of a tight squeeze for belts and all and therefore things like that are a bit expensive. Rear end doesnt look the greatest.
The biggest problem is that the older Hyundai coupes and Honda Preludes can be had for similar money and the Prelude is better car in all respects really. And I think the Hyundai handles a lot better.

The MX-6 was the same car and better looking if you ask me.
This....The Probe is based on the MX-6, but is basically it's uglier cousin. The interior is far better laid out, and of a much better quality in the MX-6, the Probe also has an odd mix of Mazda engine, but Ford management/under bonnet components.
The only real problems with the MX-6 are leaking cam cover gaskets (an easy fix) and front and rear anti roll bar drop links
Probe's have been cheap for ages, i bought a late model in mint condition nearly 6 years ago for £1300.
I liked the styling inside and out. Handled well, comfy, very practical and was the most reliable car i ever owned.
I disagree with the earlier post re gearchange though, i thought it was crap - particularly 5-4th downchanges. Also parts are quite expensive for a Ford.
Overall a good car IMO.

I had a Probe for a couple of years and really liked it (double entendre anyone?)
The engine was so smooth and quiet at idle I often found myself looking at the rev counter just to make sure it was still running! If you do end up looking at one, check for engine noises at idle - basically, there should be no noise what so ever!
The only issues I had with the car was a rather thirsty 26mpg, rusty metal sunroof (common), and leaky rocker cover gaskets - bit if a faff to change, but no big deal. Tyres were quite expensive being an unusual size too.

JC liked it.

"...and on top of all that, it's the first Ford that I can remember which looks good enough to snap knicker elastic at 50 paces"

Get a Puma, same sort of 0-60, different league on handling.
Strange comment. Are they the only two criteria for choosing a car?Although for this money I would be looking at mk4 Honda Prelude 2.2Vtecs. I bought one for £700 a few years ago for a station car and it was brilliant. Fantastic engine, great seats, nice handling and very reliable.
Saying you would rather have a Puma over a Probe is a bit like saying you would prefer syphalis over crabs to be honest!
The Puma build quality is even worse, they rot like mad underneath! For some reason the Kas, Fiestas and Pumas literally fall to pieces, all suffering from MAJOR rust issues, top mounts, brake hoses and pipes. Funnily enough the Focus and Mondeo of the age don't really give no where near as many problems??
