Airbag help

Hi my roof lining has some fire damage and needs replaced or retrimmed. Its on a jeep commander and has curtain airbags in it. If i take off the battery will this stop any activation if i aggravate them whilst removing any help please thanks Andy

Disconnect battery and leave for a while for the electrical system to drain any power,
Over night if you are paranoid, straight away if you are braver.

Unless you're planning to use a screwdriver to lever the headliner off. I'd not be inclined to do anything. Just don't go poking them.

For precaution I would disconnect the battery and leave it for 10 mins to let the capcitors discharge and go about your buisness of removing the headlining

The capacitors take HOURS to discharge. 10 mins isn't enough.

Yes your right but they wont have enough power to detonate the airbags after a few mins

But given he's only taking the headlining down. Which would only involve. The grab handles, the interior lights, the sunvisors, and the A,b,c and d (if applicable) pillar trims. He need not worry about the pyrotechnics that live perectly happily inches from his head every day.

Ah, this whole airbag scare thing is overated.

I've dismantled loads of them over the years, from Volvos to Porsches.

All I've ever done is dismantle with the ignition off. I've never gone to the trouble of disconnecting batteries.

All I've done with regard to precaution is work on the car after an overnight period of the ignition being off.

And when disconnecting the electrical connector on the bag itself, I've done it making sure I'm nowhere near the airbag itself.

I've never had one go off! Despite removal and plonking into the garage with distain.

Well, yet....
