Insulting trade-in prices.
Discussion
My father is looking to change his car. Its a 06 C180 Kompressor. 30k miles, FMBSH, auto in dark blue.
Looking at a 09 C class in independant garage advertised for 19k. Sales guy has a look at my fathers car, agrees its in an immaculate condition and goes to work out a part ex price. 5 mins later he comes back with an offer of £7250. I laugh and tell him to try again. Away he goes, comes back with a final offer of £7500 "take it or leave it".I've looked at glasses guide and his offer is way under book. Are glasses prices achievable in the current market? Any idea on what is a realistic trade in price for the above car?
Cheers

It doesn't really matter what they give you on trade in, it matters what the total outlay is on the new car.
Ie the new cars costs 19k and they give you 9k for your car, leaving you 10k to pay.
Or you haggle the new car down to 17k, but they then only give you 7k as p/x.
Both leave you in the same situation.

Agree on the price to change - how I normally approach car buying. Unfortunately garage would not budge on the price of the new car. When I mentioned price to change his answer was take the price I've offered you off the screen price of the new car.
It is the first garage we've visited so will try other places. Just surprised at the low offer - maybe he just didn't want the car. I've said to the old man to try and sell it privately.

I don't know what Glass's you're looking at but it looks £7500-£8000 to me basing it on Classic SE Auto.
A C180 isn't exactly a rare car so unless there is something special about it, it looks a fair price on the face of it.
and if it hasn't got leather, or if the tyres need changing soon, or if there's a service due soon especially if it's a big one, then the price looks more than fair.A C180 isn't exactly a rare car so unless there is something special about it, it looks a fair price on the face of it.
A 180 komp will be more sought after than the thirsty V6 petrols but really how saleable it is depends on the options. A poverty spec Classic on base model wheels with cloth seats etc will be near impossible to shift for a decent profit whereas you have more hope with an Elegance or Sport/Avantgarde with rather more in the way of luxury. What spec do you have?

You are being offered "way under book", you dont know what "is achievable in the current market" and you are asking "what is a realistic trade price?" yet you are insulted by the big bad car dealer?
Are you sure you are the best person to advise your father?

Thanks for all the "witty" comments regarding my knowledge of cars and other assumptions!
My dad's car is an Avantgarde, service and 4 new tyres last month.
Yes I do think a bid of 7.5k against a 19k car is low. Very unusual to win in the used car market but I personally think that 11.5k to change for a 3 year younger same spec car is a lot.
Merc syndrome - this is his 4th Merc - he knows what they are - he's under no assumptions that he's buying into high end exoctica. Again, people like to make assumptions without adding anything useful.
