I sold my car in november 2009 and have been a named driver on my wife's insurance since then so my no-claims discount is unused at the moment. Does it last indefinitely or does it have a time limit on it? I'll be getting something interesting and expensive to insure at some point but I'm in no hurry. However if the NCD expires it may pay to get a cheap barge just to keep the NCD going. I do have other cars but they're all on a classic car policy which doesn't accrue or use NCD.

I vaguely remember Adrian Flux telling me it was 2 years. However, this was in 2004! My Dad has a similar issue having gone back into the company car scheme just under 2 years ago following the best part of a decade in his own cars.

IIRC it's 2 years although that might be extended or shortened based on the insurer....

The OP could insure his wife's car when its up for renewal. He would then keep his NCD alive.

2 years for most broker based insurance companies but not sure about the 'direct insurer' market. AVIVA last for 3 years, there most will ask why but as you have said that been on spouses car.

Just watch out because if other vehilces are 'classic car' rated their insurers will have asked that you insurer a primary vehicle, and if you don't have one...

Another suggestion is to insuer spouses car in your name and insure it alternate years, with her as the main user. Again most insurers will not need you to reregister in your name and when married you co own assests.

I did think about insuring my wife's car in my name but I'll be buying something within a year so there'll then be cancellation fees. Worth a thinking about though.
Regarding the classic policy, I think it requires use of another car, but I'll check.
