Neighbour has been offerd one that he likes, looks in very good nick.

4 door saloon, 5 speed auto diesel

Any problems to watch out for ?

Seller is asking 6.2k for it which doesnt seem unreasonable.

Any pointers gratefully recieved.

Cheers
TJ

I've got one of these. It's a lot of car for the money.

Obviously, there's lots of hi-tech gadgets and therefore plenty to go wrong (£££££) if you are unlucky.

Look out for good service history and signs of obvious abuse is the only answer I can give.

Less than 12k PA on a S-Class CDI? Check it's genuine, verify the MOT history at VOSA.

A lot of Mercs from this era will have rust, so check wheel arches, and bottom of the doors, if it hasn't got any it may have had paint, which isn't the end of the world, but check for quality.

Poor paint will show mismatched panel colours (easy to spot if silver), over spray, rub your hand over the surfaces, it will feel rough. Also look right under the wheel arches, if it has been painted poorly it will show in the finish here.

On most cars, especially expensive cars like this I would always looks at the tyres. A matching set of premium brand tyres will give a good clue to how it has been maintained.

Do you know the source of the car? if not check the owners, history, and MOT history. This is exactly the type of car that could do 150k in its first 3/4 years. These cars were rarely bought new to sit in someones garage being pampered.
