What to replace my ST220 with? (Redux)

Back in May, I asked what I should replace my ST220 with. A lot changes in 8 months, and I have now bought my ex out of her half of the house, and I've just started seeing a wonderful lady who unfortunately lives quite a long way away. With this in mind, the time really has come to bid my ST220 farewell - I need to reduce my outgoings.
I've had my ST220 for over 5 years now. The car is in good shape, and it's done about 45,000 miles. Sadly, I expect it's going to be worth pennies. Dealer trade-in seems to be in the £4500 range - I might get more for it privately, as it's in pretty good nick, and there aren't many about. I could put a bit more to, but if it's going to be £2000 or more, I might as well spend the cash on petrol, insurance and tax.
I drive 3 miles to and from work, but I do need to economise for long journeys, VED and insurance. I also need to be able to transport me, tents, boxes of armour/weapons and crates of beer to events. I have two young children, so whatever it is needs to be able to seat four and carry luggage.
I have considered an ST-TDCI, but I don't know if it'll put the same smile on my face - I expect that whatever I choose isn't going to be nearly as much fun. I am also considering, for the first time in my life, and automatic or DSG gearbox. Any thoughts?

Automatic? I had one for the first time only last week as a rental and got on really well with it - so easy to drive, stick into drive and pretty much forget it. Made it less stressful and relaxed, esp. in and around the city. Motorways driving was a Witchfinder said:

Bored, but also not happy with £245 VED, £700 insurance and 22 MPG.My annual mileage sits around the 5,000 mark, but this may jump to 14,000ish with a couple of lifestyle changes that may be on the horizon.

unless you are bored with it hold on to it as the sums dont ad up.
Pros for keeping:
-You have a low mileage car
-You know your cars history and you are happy with the condition
-You wont get the true value of the car when you trade it
-Diesel is more expensive
-You are only doing an extra 12000 miles a year, so while you'll save at the pump you'll pay for it in the trade in

The Mondeo manages 34 MPG on the motorway!Acer12, I'd probably sell privately, and avoid having to put any extra money in. It looks like I might have to migrate to the hell of "boring car," but I really hope not!

The only problem with keeping the ST220 is the fuel consumption. If you are anything like me you'll be getting 25mpg at best. A swap out for the ST diesel might be an option or, perhaps you can get LPG fitted to the ST? I don't think I'd ever part with mine to make a marginal downgrade (i.e. I drop back to 1.1 saxo for £500 or I keep the ST220) as the ST just does everything so well for the money. By the time you sell yours, buy some diesel run around for the same sort of money....is it really worth it?
