So, I'm currently driving driving round in a Vauxhall VX 220 Lightning Yellow. Its very loud in colour & sound and I think that at 44 I can just about get away with it. However, Im sure there will come a day when I do the 'shop window' test and realise that I look ridiculous and its time for something a little more subtle. I've never wanted to own a modern red Ferrari spider for exactly that reason (a 246 Dino or Daytona is a different matter). Are there any modern sports cars that a 50+ guy can get away with without looking like he's trying to recapture something that he lost a long time ago? Don't get me wrong If you're a 55 year old, balding, pink Hackett T-Shirt wearing, chubster you've got every right to be driving a Gallardo Spider but....some people might think you look ridiculous. wink

Avoid anything without a roof and you'll probably be ok.

I often feel far too old to be driving my clio sport around at 30. But it ticks all the boxes. So sod it.

I dont understand the recapturing youth idea? Most people who buy these things in there 40's and 50's do so because they have never had the chance before. (money, family, mortgage) How is that trying to recapture anything? The whole midlife crisis expression seems have been taken wildly out of context these days.
A forty year old guy has worked his whole life building up his buisness, raising kids, paying down his mortgage. Finally his buisness picks up and he starts making enough desposable income to buy the porsche he always wanted.... "Oh, who does he think he is, sad bd having a midlife crisis". I just refuse to buy into or participate in this school of thought.

I'm not sure about being too young. I'm 22, love cars and always have done. Always tried to buy the cars I want. I'm worried that in the future, with extra commitments and responsibilities there might not be the same chance to have something fun! smile

Regardless of age the average person is just going to see a loud yellow sports car. Thus, their first thoughts about the driver are probably going to be along the lines of "Show off" or "Attention seeking Twcensoredt".

Some people will never get the fact that we petrolheads buy cars for the purpose of having fun driving them. Sod them I say - their loss. If you enjoy driving it surely that's all that matters.

Have a word! laugh

22 is about the point insurance becomes remotely affordable on one of those I would have thought. With reason too. I wouldn't trust the average 19-20yr old with one.

Consider say a 20 year old driving around in an XJS. It just "looks" wrong. One must be 40 years old to own such a vehicle wink Same goes for say a DB5. I can't imagine seeing a young(ish) person driving one, it would just look wrong....

Check out the music video for Usher - Let it burn.

Young guy, DB5 ( from what I remember, anyway, been a while since I saw that particular video!)

Driving my old RB320 at 48 made me laugh on occasion as people did a double take based on what their preconceptions made them expect to see behind the wheel.

Just drive what you want to drive, not what other people think you should drive. It's up to you what you spend youre hard earned on!! 44 is young anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'd have one as well, but I'd never feel right driving her........ I'd also have this..

But again, I think I'd have to wait 15 years before I could drive her........
