here is an example of a DIESEL one! Now many might know I tuned my TDI hard (100bhp to close to 300bhp) but I don't see why anyone would want to deliberately lose boost via one of these "PFFFFT" valves when you change gear. I will never lose air that on a derv is meant to be 100% consumed by the engine. petrol turbo is different of course!

Now don't even get me started on fake kits on little N/A petrols.... winkbiggrin

PS: If any mod is looking in, I couldn't find a suitable "diesel and crappy dump valve" section so hope its OK in here as other vaguely auto related stuff is. smile

On a petrol turbo, they are useful and sound great (if you are into rally style stuff, like me). Fake kits on cars with no turbo are in the "avoid like the plague, owner is a moron" category stuff for me.

Those are some proper cars that need dump valves. Those Audis do have a funny valve noise, instead of the usual "pssssht" it sounds like it's opening and closing very quickly and giving that "tsh tsh tsh" noise. Very cool!

Hate the sound of dump valves. If you must have one, make it a re-circ, then you can hear all the other lovely little noises the turbo and wastegate makes.

Cant see the video at the mo but i would have thought that would be wastegate noises rather than a 'dump valve'.

I once saw some young lads setting the dump valve off as much as they could in their non-turbo shopping hatch. They were desperately trying to get noticed by a couple of girls by doing so. The girls went out of their way to ignore them.

Made me chuckle. The foolishness of youth eh! smile

I'm a compressor stall man myself. Not via choice, it's just the noise I get from the standard YBD install. It's a short of "Chid-d-d-d" sound overlaid with a "chooo" sound hehe Keeps me amused anyway.

Well, it's referred to as wastegate chatter, but you're right it's technically not the dump valve creating the noise.

Actually I think you are talking about compressor surge. Wastegates don't really make any noise, unless you have the wastegate exiting via a screamer pipe, and then it makes a jet like sound on full throttle, nothing like a dump valve or compressor surge 'flutter' .

^^^ This. Common misconception that the flitter noise is the wastegate, it's not, it's the compressor stalling as compressed air gets forced back through the blades because the dump valve isn't opening fast or wide enough (or even there isn't a dump valve at all).

Great little video here of compressor stall on a Cosworth (and a big-arse drift)...!!!

It's one of those common misconceptions. Maybe because Clakson has whittered on about 'wastegate chatter' on more occasion than one...
