I was driving along the road when I saw a 'youth' (young man, 15 - 18 years old, I'd say) at the side of the road, with at least one other. The lad was doing that hand patting action, suggesting he was making a snowball. We made eye contact, then he threw it directly at the windscreen of my Jaaaag.

There then ensued a bit of stupidity on my part.

I took offence at being snowballed - it could have been a stone for all I knew - so pulled up as soon as it was safe and got out of the car in order to remonstrate with Mr Snowball. Then I realised that there were about six of them and not two. Unlike most PHers (apparently) I'm not a 6'4" 18 stone rugby player. They were all bigger than me and I heard shouting from them. Some were backing off but three started walking towards me. There was another lad stood by the side of the road close to me, but I don't know if he was involved or not.

Now I was in a bit of a position. So I opened the back door of the car, put the lead on my dog and got him out. By the time I'd done this they had all disappeared. I was very glad of this and I resumed my journey.

I think I was a bit rash in pulling up and getting out, but on the other hand, they looked a bit too old to be throwing snowballs and, I would have thought, might have been aware of the potential danger of throwing things at moving traffic on icy roads.

Anyway, that is all. Just thought I'd share.

So they stood their ground against you but ran off when you got your pet out? Sounds like you're more a typical PH'er than you think!

I had a go at 4 youths (age 12-15 at a guess - I'm 39) today in Marlow that were throwing snowballs at moving cars in the high street (I was on foot having just got off my bike). Told the lads to pack it in and that there was CCTV watching them. Elderly gent nearby (5 yds) was watching (ready to assist) and lady in nearby shop also came out to aid if required. Lads generally stood their ground but were aware they had been caught. Lady in shop then said lady in car across the street (4x4 or course, lady mid 40's at a guess) was trying to get my attention - I though she'd probably had one thrown at her so went over - turned out she was 'responsible' for them and as far as I'm aware had been sat there the whole time. She then starts giving me grief!!!!

I stood my ground (middle of the road almost with my bike) and 'remonstrated' with her until she knew I'd be prepared to stay there and argue and potentially call the police.

She couldn't see what the lads were doing wrong - which was the bit that got my back up the most.

Throwing snowballs at moving cars in a high street packed with shoppers and icy cold snowy roads....grrrrr!!!

Sorry I read it wrong lol, thought you were a 6 ft 4 18 stone rugby player. I always have a walking stick of something in the car for emergencies. I'd have got out of the car too, snowballing windscreens can easily cause accidents.

i love the mentality of some people here.

get upset about a snowball, but find it perfectly fine to approach and shout at 15yr olds?

not to mention the fact you tell us all about having the crap scared out of yourself by the 3 remaining 15yr olds.....
so again, think the sensible asnwer to get your dog out.

wow, if your that easily scared, get back in your fking car you muppet

Of course it's ok to reproach youths who misbehave in public, that's exactly what's wrong with this country, people are too scared to stick up for what's right and tell off people are play up and commit antisocial acts, go to Germany, Scandanavia etc and they don't tolerate it and people will always say something.

Posted this before, but it's fitting. From the other side of the fence:

A few years back when I was in the second year of sixth form, I was walking down the road away from the school at the beginning of lunch break, headed toward the student car park (this was about 150 yards away). There was just my friend and I; we were going to have some fun in the deserted snowy car park whilst no-one was about. Just as we left the school grounds, we passed a couple of chavs from the year below, one of whom randomly chucked a snowball at a Nissan Navara driving along the road. The pickup slowed right down and then continued on - I thought to myself 'chav tt' or something similar and continued walking toward the car park. A couple of minutes later when we got there, Angry Man in the Navara was waiting - and he thought I had thrown it! Now, he didn't really believe me when I said it wasn't me (probably what any seventeen-year-old who was pinned up against the side of a car by a big fat bloke would say, but I don't look like I've been on Jeremy Kyle) and this led to him getting even angrier and he then tried to hit me. This resulted in a bit of a fight, but fortunately for me Angry Man had a bit of trouble controlling his substantial mass on the slippery surface, allowing me to make a quick exit. I was really quite annoyed about it afterwards. My mate was completely useless; he just stood there terrified for the whole five minutes or so it lasted.

I would have done the exact same thing had it been my car that got hit, but please make sure you're certain who did it first!hehe

Thank you for your constructive comments.

Firstly, who said anything about me shouting at them?

They were 15 - 18, couldn't say exactly because of hats etc. Had this come to scuffling (which wasn't my intention) I might be able to take on one or two. Three is pushing things a bit even with 15 year olds, wouldn't you say. What was to say that the other three wouldn't have chipped in. So yes, the sensible answer was to get the dog out as it made them go away.

So in summary, fist yourself.

Come to Scandanavia and you'll get a shock. Children respect families and their elders and behave themselves.

Granted they have a bit more activities available to them than PS3s and sniffing glue.

I didn't say it's ok to assult them, just tell them to stop dicking about and point out how dangerous it is, same as I did the other week with some teenagers letting their little brothers and sisters walk on inch thick ice over a deep duck pond near me. They got a earful.
