Off to look at one of these for a friend now. She knows absolutely nothing about cars and I know absolutely nothing about Renaults.

Can anyone offer some fast advice on what to look for and what to ask please?

It's a 2007 Grand Scenic 1.5 DCi Expression on 77k miles from "Used Car Supermarket" in Manchester.

My only advice would be to walk away quickly from it and buy something Japanese, or at worse a Zafira.

They can be a lot of trouble.

To expand a little, a company I used to work for ran these (30+) as fleet cars for ferrying around clients, they spent more time in the garage being fixed than any other car.

And 88th place in the 2008 JD power survey backs this up.

Uncle had one and he had nothing but issues kept breaking down (many electrical issues) he hated it and he had owned a old shape kia sportage before redface
Now drive's a nissan quashaki (cant spell) thing which is quite a nice car.
I would just get a zafari myself but certainly not one from a car supermarket.

Renault, diesel. 2 words which for a number of years have just created problems for their owners when combined.

There are more reliable small MPVs on the market, I know of nobody who has owned a diesel megane variant without hassles, out of warranty some of them will be expensive.

On the other side of the river, I've used one now for 110k miles. 6 days a week for 2 years. It's been a company car, serviced every 12k/3months. No problems so far, bar a dodgy thermostat. Electrics problems? What electric problems? It's been fantastic in the snow, even on enery savin michelbin tyres. It'll seat 5 adults with ease, and the boot is big enough for plenty. HTH. Lee.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

The car looked and sounded OK to be fair, but they took the piss a bit with regards to a part ex price on her car and a deal on the Scenic so she's walked for now.

I work for Renault and I can safely say, that car is right about due for a new dashboard. They go at 3 year intervals and that will be £1500 out of your wallet sir. Renault do make some good cars, but make sure they are within their warranty period

Or alternatively you can just get them reconditioned with the same mileage, so no dash replacement selling issues, for around £150 and they are held in with about 4 screws and easily replaced by anyone with an ounce of sense.

But what you just said does sound like a main dealer answer to the problem.

Renault Scenics are better than most people would like to think and I have experienced many less reliable German cars. They are not the best steer out there but they are good value for family owners who care more about practicality than drivability.

But hey this is Pistonheads so tell her to buy an MX5
