I just had this idea but there may be an obvious flaw which I'm missing as I've never seen anyone do it before.

Instead of buying snow chains or snow socks (which are obviously both quite pricey) how about just wrapping one or two cable ties between two spokes in the wheel and around the tyre, so the is effectively a lateral plastic ridge in the tyre for grip (you could do this at as many points around the tyre as you wanted to. I know that's a rubbish explanation so he's a quick photoshop to demonstrate (cable ties in red).

Obviously you'd take them off once you were off the snow/ice.

Would it work?

In theory I think it would work but cable ties wouldn't last very long before they snapped.

All you'll be doing it puting a flat surface on the grove of the tyre for the snow, ice and slush to build up on. It would work for a few yards then clog itself up and spin smooth so it the tyres would have a slick surface of ice.

It would be an enormous PITA putting them on and they would snap in minutes!

how about using rope, that would give good grip but im not sure how long it would last before it wears through it would definately last longer than zipties though

Rope would probably snag on the calipers

Snagging on the caliper probably isn't a big deal as it's a robust bit of kit . . . snagging on the brake hose connected to the caliper much more likely.

And you'd have to be pretty inventive on the subsequent insurance form to explain that one . . .

i've heard of people doing this with mountain bikes (need to have disc brakes mind, or the ties will get caught in your v brakes)

but i wouldnt want to try it with a car

Rope is (sash cord) OK for getting unstuck. Tie 3 or 4 bits round each driven wheel, get unstuck then remove.
