One station I pass on the way to work (Staffordshire) has increased its price for unleaded petrol by 8p in just two weeks!!!

At this rate we will all be using pedal power by mid 2011. Who’s to blame OPEC, government or garage?

Petrol/diesel prices in Aberdeen have flown up since the weather got bad. Wen the snow went away, the prices dropped (by 1p/litre) and lo and behold when the snow reappeared last night - prices were up again!

This is a bit worrying. Being abroad a lot recently I haven't filled the car for about a month (and the TVR needs super unleaded too) - I daren't look at the boards outside the filling station now.

They actually did a thing about UK petrol prices on one of the American news channels - a sort of 'so you think you're hard done by? ...' piece.

Similarly I was at a track in the States last week where they run corporate days and the organiser explained they had to detune the racing engines significantly because they couldn't run on pump gas. "Otherwise it'd be like $8 a gallon," he joked as if that would be utterly unthinkable. That's about the same as my last fill up with the Chimaera (and I don't suppose that does much more to the gallon than a 690kg single seater either rolleyes).

If crude oil reaches the highs of 2008 then we could see close to £2 per litre if sterling continues to be weak against the dollar.

Lets hope we don't see $130+ on crude as its only $87 ish at the moment.

Tell me about it. I get about 14mpg in my current toy. cry

God knows what it'd go down to on a track day (if it ever got through the noise test).

It's not good value when you compare it to what it costs here in the States fella, that's for sure.
But is what you are paying at the pump in the US what that fuel is really costing you?

The US must be pumping billions upon billions of tax dollars into propping up/defending foreign regimes to maintain oil supplies, they (as do we) have huge military prescence, aircraft carriers, aircraft, men and hardware in the middle east along with soldiers getting shot and killed etc. The costs of this must be astronomical. All this is the real cost of your gas.

Now tell me how cheap your fuel is again.

On the subject of the UK I don't think it will get much higher - it's down to supply and demand - I'm sure I read somewhere that £1.30 is the cutoff point where people will cut back, not drive, car share etc etc. The price of a barrel only comprises a relatively small percentage of the price we pay at the pump - if it goes from $87 to $130 it will add a few pence per litre. However demand will then drop, so the price will drop...

If petrol reaches £2 soon, then cheap(ish) uneconomical cars like the RX8 will probably be obsolete in the UK.

Try living in the M5.

It honestly scares me now how much it costs to fuel a car. The M5 is painful, but it's painful for anyone with the recent increases, great MPG or not.

Don't forget that in the States, although it's half the cost of our fuel, they have to drive twice as far as us to get anywhere.

Had an accident a few weeks ago in my Astra which gets between 25-30 on mostly town journeys. Been using a borrowed car which gets 40+ while mine's fixed; dreading going back now the fuel's that much more. It may not seem a lot but when you can barely afford to fill it anyway it's noticeable.

119.9p/L for 95RON and 124.9p/L for diseasel at Shell in Carlisle today, so not quite as bad round here as it sounds like it is in some other places. Depressing though that 95RON now costs more than it did at the height of the last price spike. I console myself with the fact that I'm earning a whole heap more these days so can at least afford it but it still grates to spend £59 filling the MINI when it was down to £42 when I bought it just under 2 years ago...

Given that I'm from England and working here, it's REALLY costing me about $2.80 a gallon at the most, oh and they fill it up for you as well.
