Paraphrasing here, but

"In a slide, take your foot off the accelerator"

Is really bad advice for the current conditions.

So with all the country crippled by snowy icy roads, the BBC couldn't actually find a low adhesion surface on which to demonstrate how to drive on snowy icy roads!?

The link doesn't really go anywhere. (Maybe just my work computer being numb).

A genuine question here : Does the law allow us to use rope on a snowy public highway? ie. looping rope through your alloys around the tyres.

You see you say that. But if you're under-steering while on the throttle which is what they were doing. It's pretty much the correct advise. That and take off some lock which they also covered.

Is that the most common problem in the snow and ice though? Even their video showed that the problem seems to be locking the rears and ending up in over-steer when descending a hill.... And they didn't cover that at all.

In my current and last car, the most common problem I have encountered in the snow, is 2 inches of the white stuff and a 1 degree incline complete flummoxing the rear tires.

Set off using just the clutch indeed rolleyes

It's not illegal, but may be considered in a collision or if it shreads and flails some innocent pedestrians face.....

do it if you get really stuck, remove as soon as is safe to do so as you would with snow chains!

I think they are saving over-steer for the second instalment, they consult with with Troy Queef for that one biggrin

I haven't had any understeer at all, on account of front engine rwd. All the weight's over the front wheels which helps them cut through the snow. My rear end though, which has barely any weight on it, even with the boot loaded up, feels like it's trying to get away and head for a hot climate every time it sees a corner.

I've only had one understeery moment this winter, and it quickly turned to oversteer as the back lost traction too, take some lock off, lift off a little, let it straighten out, steady as you go.

Unfortunately the person driving behind me didnt heed the warning by seeing me slide, steamed into the corner and understeered right off into a two foot high bank of compressed frozen snow at about 7mph.

Yep, do that in my Esprit or the OH's Elise all you have is a car slowly wheelspinning on tickover. You could then get out and push though, I s'pose. biggrin

Luckily the RR doesn't seem to care how much throttle is applied. evil
