Have our works doo booked up for today - a whole day of karting on an outdoor track (followed by meal and obligatory disco)...

And now it snows... Brilliant!

Wondering if they will still let us out on the track!?

Which track?

Typically they won't let you race if it's snowing/covered in snow.

I've raced at Buckmore Park lots of times when it's been cold enough for ice, but as long as the track is mostly dry they still let us race.

What are winter tyres? Do you have any information on them?

Its all academic, they wont let you use winter tyres as they'll destroy the surface of the track with all their little studs.

On arrive and drive type karting they will have nothing other than slicks. If they do let you race, it will be on slicks, no matter what the weather.

Takes some control to go fast on slicks in the pissing down rain yes

Not true of all A+D tracks, but you're right 99% of the time.

Daytona Milton Keynes run inters on all sessions on their A+D Dmax 2-stroke karts.

If you're trying hard enough, it doesn't feel cold. I quite often take my lid off during enduros ater a stint and there's a huge plume of steam. I keep a towel handy to mop up sweat.

If you just trundle about then sure you'd get cold. If you're trying, and are close to the limit, you won't get too cold (exceptions are toes and fingers, but I just wear a big pair of socks and put up with cold fingers..)

My first race at Rye (years ago) had 30 mins of practise and a 2 hour race. After about 25 minutes of practise (which was also qualifying), my team was on pole. It then started to rain.

I've raced in the rain before, quite a few times. It became apparent that nobody else had.

We had a one lap advantage on the whole field after 5 minutes of racing. It would have been more but for the number of yellow flags due to people losing it and sliding off.

I do remember one interesting experience from that race. It's the only time I've been in a kart where pulling out from the kart in front's wheeltracks (to overtake) caused me to aquaplane in a straight line. Pulling back into his tracks stopped it again. (NB, I have been out in practise sessions where I was aquaplaning myself all over the place).

Unless they're not fast karts, in which case they won't be able to push your ability, so you won't warm up.

I've been on lots of tracks - indoor and out. I've not come across outdoor karts that couldn't be hustled, yet. To be honest I can't quite imagine how that could be achieved, unless they were so slow you could drive with your foot flat on the gas everywhere without needing to slow for any corners.

I've not found any like that yet, outdoors (some indoor ones are a bit "noddy", granted.
