Just accepted a new job, start January. Still working at old job, still got company car. Need to attend a meeting with new company in week so got day off to drive up to their head office for day, no problem.

However current employer insurance forbids use for business other than for current employer. So I'm wondering now if I'm insured to drive to meeting as could be construed as business use for different employer couldn't it?

I know it sounds a bit picky, but I'm paranoid about proper insurance cover.

Answered your own question there. Do not do it as you won't be insured. maybe get a couple of quotes and if necessary change insurer - it may cost a couple of quid but better than 6 points and a conviction.

Thanks for response. It isn't my insurer, it's the companies, so can't change it. Hmmm...

You're not actually employed by the other company yet - are you ?

Check with the insurer is the best advice.

Are you covered for personal use in the car? Do you have a relative/ friend that lives close to your destination? wink

With hindsight I probably should have done this, but already explained reason for taking day off. I could just ask about insurance but suspect they'll say not covered just in case.

Sadly you will be on the train then. However, if your relationship with existing employer is still good, then maybe they could DayInsure it for you and you pay the difference? I found it difficult to get day insurance for a car owned by a company recently (lots of them proclude it in T's & C's), and ended up getting said company to day insure it, transferring the cost on to me (with a fee of course).

Might still be worth it cash-wise as trains are ridiculously expensive IMO

If it's just insurance, can't you get day insurance ?

Different game if the car provided to you cannot be used too.

It's am interesting one because I'm not employed (yet) by the people I've got the meeting with, nor am I being paid for going there, not am I getting mileage allowance. So I guess it comes down to whether an insurance company would regard that as on business of new employer. Tricky one.

Why are you going to a meeting with your proposed new employer?

Are they paying you to do work for them or is it simply a meeting to familiarise yourself or to finalise your contract?

How did you go to the interviews?

Surely you are covered for personal SDP use which I would have thought this was (if your proposed new employer is not paying you for and you are not going to do any work for him) or is this a "pool" car for business use only?

Does the new employer have a blanket vehicle insurance policy that would provide the required cover should the worst occur ?

It's just to chat about strategy for next year, pick up IT equipment etc. My car is for my SDP use as well as work, it's not a pool car.

No, they have no company vehicles.
