Adding drivers to yur insurance policy - rip off!
Discussion
When I bought my car I got a new insurance quote online with just me, then another with my girlfriend on the policy (accident claim and SP30 on her record) so I could have a rough idea of the additional costs to add her onto my existing policy. It brought the price up by about £75 for the year so thought, great, she can pay that and we can both drive it.
I just phoned up *insert cheap insurance provider here* to add her to my already running policy, which has about 3 months left to run. They wanted £85 including their admin fee to add her on! I asked why it was so much more than taking out a new policy and adding her on their and the man couldn't give me a straight answer, saying he needed the quote reference numbers and that she was very young etc. etc.
I could certainly understand if it was a little bit more expensive than simply working it out as £75/12*3 = £18.75 but I was expecting something around £30, not £85!! I've now got two quotes with reference numbers, one is £585.45 with just me (as of today for a year) and the other is £686.02 with me and my girlfriend for a year, as of today. I'm hoping I can give these to my man with the foreign accent at the call centre and he can work that out at around £25 to add her on. Wishful thinking?!?!?! I can't face another 10 minutes of sitting in a queue so I'll ring him back later.

The answer is that they do this because they can.
He tried to tell me it's because there's a 10% discount for buying online! I think the difference is a little more than 10%! I will ring him back tonight and hopefully get her added on.
The useless *insert cheap insurance provider here* solicitors that my girlfriend has been using still haven't finalised her case after her accident over a year ago, so we've given up waiting to get a payout for the time being and decided to sell my S4, get a cheaper car to insure and get her added onto my policy.

This is partly the truth, though their estimation of the risk involved could of changed now?Logically though maybe its just that the risk of adding a driver part way through a policy is much higher than that of a driver that was added from the start?

Why would that be?Logically though maybe its just that the risk of adding a driver part way through a policy is much higher than that of a driver that was added from the start?

Its a minimum discount of 10%, depending on the risk it can be alot higher. The useless Bell(end) solicitors that my girlfriend has been using still haven't finalised her case after her accident over a year ago, so we've given up waiting to get a payout for the time being and decided to sell my S4, get a cheaper car to insure and get her added onto my policy.
Also take note of the name and shame policy best to edit it out.

It could be that since there's only 3 months to go until renewal, they are using short term rates for the additional driver.
Insurance companies are not all the same, but in general; those that sell cheap will tend to try to recover every penny on the alterations and additions during the term.
Oh, and it's more cost effective for them to have you speak to a call centre, esp. if that's in a far off land.

My car has been in to have its steering rack replaced for a couple of weeks now, so my mum added me onto her Fiesta's policy while it was in the garage - the actual cost wasn't too bad at about £25 a week, but it's the admin fee of £15 that takes the piss! We've had to extend the period for which I'm added from one week, to two weeks, and finally to three weeks and have had to pay £45 in admin charges in order to give them more money!
