My winter project arrived.

X Reg 2.2 Vectra SRi in Silver with a cracked cylinder head on plug #4 (the job was done two years ago and has gone again)
Starts and runs, 99k, car is in pretty good nick with the exception of a couple of small scrapes and the front bumper held up on the o/s by a bungee. The front elec windows stick in the runners and need to be hand forced up and down. Theres the odd broken cosmetic bit inside and a couple of bulbs out, but im quite pleased.
Failing that, heater works, radio works, has an mot until July 2011, all 4 tyres are good (the backs seem like new) and both keys work fine too.
Never done anything major like this before so cant wait for daylight to get cracking on stripping it down.
Any tips would be appreciated, im going to label everything as it comes off so i know where it goes back on.
If it all goes bandit, i'll jus break the car for parts, but would be a shame cause its very pretty. No pictures but i'll get some photos when i start
Oh, and i need to get a Haynes Manual :P

What are you going to do about the head, just get a straight replacement? How much do you reckon that will cost?
Regarding advice, I'd say invest in a lot of these
for collecting parts and label the bags so you know what came from where. Also Ikea do a load of variously sized plastic boxes with snap lids (think like cheap n cheerful tupperware) for further organisation. Organisation of parts is the key!

its not that bad a job. just make sure you remember where everything goes.
scrap the cracked head and get a second hand replacement.
you'll need new bolts as well as a head gasket (make sure you tighten up in sequence and to the correct torque)
not sure if the 2.2 is belt or chain drive either way putting this back will be the hardest part. just make sure you have spot on before you start it up.
if its belt replace it and if the water pump is driven off it replace that too.
the 1.8 and 2.0 have this setup not sure about 2.2
