Traders warranty
Discussion
Purchased a car recently, came with a 3 month warranty from a trader. It felt a bit skitty under breaking and pulled a lot on some roads. Assumed it was tracking or something.
Turns out, all 4 wheels needed balancing and the front wheels were out a fair bit on tracking.
Now, I've just taken it to my local tyre place (I've used them before and very happy) to get diagnosed and fixed, assuming that the warranty wont cover this kind of thing? Am I right?
Would he have said it was fine when you drove it away? Its more to rest my mind spending £80 rather than taking it back to the trader and wasting my time.

I doubt he'll cough up the money for someone else to fix it, as he has a guy he'll have good rates with.
If I was after saving the cash I should have taken it back.
What sort of car and trader? I personally wouldn't let a car go outfrom here that needed any work doing like that persaonally although to err is human. If I was after saving the cash I should have taken it back.

It'd still be worth a call to him, an £80 job from my point of view would be easier to just to post a cheque out to you. Saves a lot of hassle at both ends really.

I'll make a call, he can always so no I suppose.
His local tyre place will probably do it for him for £30 if he is a regualr so I dont think he'll send you a cheque for £80 for that job.
Also what is to say you had hit a pot hole or kerb or something after you bought it and that was the cause of it?
Its also very unlikely all 4 wheels will need balanced. Its more likely the tyres are out of shape (very common on cheaper directional tyres).
If the tyres are out of shape then he should pay to have them replaced as it takes a lot of miles/time for them to go like that so wouldnt be your use that has caused it.

I'll see how it drives shortly. If its still bad, it'll go back to him. Also what is to say you had hit a pot hole or kerb or something after you bought it and that was the cause of it?

Didn't both chasing him up in the end.
But, the we soon realised the thermostat had gone. So a week after collection, we reported it to him. He offered to pay for the part, I pay for labour. I wasn't happy with that and never agreed. He then said he'll sort it, phoned me back and said to take it to his mechanic. No mention of me paying anything.
Collected it last night, turns out, he was still expecting me to pay for it. Apparently it wouldn't have been covered by the warranty as the car was ok, just didn't heat up well, and he was doing me a favour.
I didn't want the mechanic to be shafted, so I paid. But really? Wheels out 180g on balancing (worst the guy at the garage has seen) and thermostat broken and he doesn't cough up for either.

What a great guy
I'd involve trading standards at this point, if you can be bothered. I'm guessing you're now about £200 down, and that would annoy me enough to spend an hour or two pursuing the dealer.
Give TS a ring and find out the steps you need to take. Then decide whether it's worth it to you or not. You're at the point where I'd be pissed off enough to want my £200 back.

Maybe I didn't make it clear. I paid the £50 for the labour (only) for the thermostat. He still paid for the part.

I'm £125 down now. Chalk it down to experience and stay away from 'Traders'. I'd have had more luck with BMW direct if I bought from them, I'd refuse to leave until they agreed. But small time dealers with no 'processes' in place are pointless.
ETA: We traded in a car, which apparently needed a new wiper motor at £120. He argued that he could have come back to me and asked for a contribution, as we 'obviously' knew it was broken. My response was that I don't sell a car with a warranty, it was his responsibility to check it 100%. However I DID buy a car with a warranty, so expect things to get fixed.

Maybe you should moan that the paint was dirty too. Why not get it valeted and see if the trader and warranty will cover it.Turns out, all 4 wheels needed balancing and the front wheels were out a fair bit on tracking.

Anything relating to tyres, wheels or similar are not covered under warranty. Even main dealer warranties do not normally cover such things (even on new cars!).
In all honesty £125 total spend to get a used car ship shape isn't the end of the world - it is barely a tank of fuel these days.
You don't say how old the car is, but if it ia few years old then thermostats do become pretty much a consummable.
It would have been nice if the dealer had paid the labour and probably should but then again it would have been nice of you to point out the wiper. Bit of poetic justice perhaps?
