Car for under 4 K

New car for under 4 K
What do people reckon. We need a cheap economical
Car to get M to work and do the occasional run down
south from up north.
What do people reckon to a diesel.
Cavalier ? Mondeo ? Not fond of French cars.
We will be doing the maintenance our selves.
Any ideas. Thanks.

I have a mint Volvo 940 turbo as a daily driver, the 2 litre turbo makes driving what is basically an old mans car very enjoyable, it only cost me £2,500 on a '93 K. Though it's not all that economical, I've owned it for nearly 2 years and apart from oil and tyres, I've only had to replace the front pads. A better option in my opinion would be to spend your money on a Lotus Elite, but these cars don't meet any of your requirements apart from the price, but are infinetly preferable to Cavalier's, Mondeo's or Deisels! Good hunting.
If you want a good second hand familly sized car with Diesel power that isn't French for under 4 grand you are strugling a bit The Mondeo is a good car with a crap engine, Vectra the oposite. What about an early Octavia , or a Seat Toledo . should be a few about at that sort of price I would guess .
If not how about my nice Rover 214 GSI j reg 77K, CL, PAS, EW, EM, EW, ESR. Tidy reliable and economical . £850 ono , a bargain

Whats wrong with french cars anyway?
An early (N/P/R-reg) Peugeot 406 1.9 TD is a great car for the money, plenty of standard goodies, a nice smooth ride, 47 MPG+. What about a Renault Safranne? you could get leather, air, electric everything for 4k easily!.
Vauxhall Omega's seem to suffer from depreciation too.
My dad looked at a P-reg 2.0i CDX saloon for £2,500 with 12 months warranty.

Go Mondeo, sod the diesel, get a 2.0 - 136bhp, good handling (mines an estate and goes round corners superbly) excellent reliability and from your 4k you can buy an L reg Ghia (4 elec windows, sunroof, power driver seat, elec mirrors, ABS, immob, alarm etc etc etc alloys) and insure it for about 4 years. And it really is a damn good, reliable car, the only thing that seems to be a problem is the cats only last about 10k miles, but its only 150 quid a pop for a new one, or 10k is usually within the guarantee antway, so you get it replaced for nowt!. So good that when I get my V8S I am keeping it.
THEY ARE CRIMINALLY CHEAP AND WORTH FAR MORE TO YOU THAN YOU'D EVER PAY.

S*d it, get a Senator 24V, b*gger the petrol consumption, it will certainly get you to and from the north quick enough when you want it to.
More lamps buzzers and bells than you'll know what to do with, all whilst sitting in a leather armchair. If you've got to get a run about at least get a comfortable one

I agree with harry. I've got an old Merc 190 2.3 Cosworth, 86C Reg, cost £3k, 116,000mls, FSH. Quiet, comfortable, fairly quick, bit different and built so well it feels it will go on forever. I also doubt it will ever be worth any less than £3k. I used to have a 4x4 Sierra 2.9 Ghia Estate with 240k miles, another great cheap car. It seems even better value when I see how easy it is to spend the cost of either of these on keeping the Griff running !
