What second car?
Discussion
Best old banger I ever bought was a Volvo 240DL for £400, cost £300 to run for two years and then I traded it in and got £250 and CD player upgrade for it. At least it was RWD, but it was an auto, but you could get some really lurid angles on it when negotiating roundabouts, used to scare the BMWs of Surrey!!!!
That would leave you a bit left over for more tlc on the 944 or put in the piggy bank for the TVR upgrade

Minis are great fun, you could buy a nice car save some money and get some bits for it as well, I’ve got 6 at the moment so slightly biased. I would recommend going for a early pre 93 car then you can lose the cat, get a big valve head and some high lift rockers, on a standard 1275 it makes a big difference.
I had a 924 a few years ago and had a lot of problems, electrics failed regularly, head gasket blew, wheel bearing seized at 70 on a motorway causing the hub to snap, the wheel disk and half the calliper came off, apart from that it was a great car.

Another mini fan, go on, you know it makes sense !!
Other than that, there are some cheap early Honda CRX's about, Vtec is best but 1.6i are still good fun. Check out rusty rear ends though as the tailgates can leak.
Also venerable 205Gti, not exactly original but get a good one, or a ropey one and throw away the bugger'd brakes/suspension and start again.
Don't laugh, Metro Gti, with the 16v K series in. Limited on suspension mods due to Hydrogas, but good'n'cheap now.
Something bigger ?? MG Maestro ?? Again look out for a good one (mutually exclusive ??), they are out there, and it'll blow MKII Golf's (except 16V/G60 obviously) away.
Err, 'zuki Swift ?? Rover 220Gti ?? XR2 with/without cosworth rear spoiler ??
Been testing another turbine, must have got too close again .........

Another 944. Enjoy yourself all the time and halve the mileage on each.
I was thinking of this Kevinday!
Unfortunately, if there are quite good deals to be done out there the 944 is still a car which can sometimes require expensive maintenance (belts, clutch, tyres...).
It may not prove reasonable since I'm looking for a totally inexpensive car to run...
(and anyway one can't find a decent 944 below 3 grands)
Maybe a Lada Niva?
