Ed was Hammerwerfer on PH, and was here for a long time.

The first time I met him was on my first trip to the Nurburgring. We had been chatting on line on the old Ringers Forum ,and he offered to teach me the basics. I told him I was bringing a new M6 which left him deeply unimpressed, as he was really a Porsche man. He was a helluva driver and instructor. I got in the passenger seat of the car and Ed took off like a rocket, saying "we'll take it easy first lap". ..GOD! he's a maniac...flat out..DAMN! we're going to hit the wall...but its gone behind us...whoa..wheels in the air..and Ed has barely moved in the drivers seat. He shows me how to take a corner flat out wrong and recover by actually doing it. Perfect control all round the track. He was a car guy through and through and had done thousands of laps round the NS. At then end of a week we would have a beer or three at the Pistenklause, and it appeared as if he knew everyone in Nurburg. One day he was instructing a kid in an Evo who lost it at Fuchsrohre, and Ed woke up in the wreckage, (kid was fine). Ed was basically fine too, but they checked him out as he had been knocked out.
They discovered something else, though. Ed was seriously ill.

He continued to drive and instruct for a couple of years, and often posted on PH. More recently, the cancer progressed. I went to see him ten days ago at the hospice in Ireland, where he was awake and alert despite the painkillers, and we had a grand old time talking about matters automotive. He was completely lacking in self pity and we had a bit of a laugh. He died two days ago. he was one of the great car enthusiasts I knew, and a wonderful driver and friend. RIP Ed, the Ring is sadder without you.

Wow, a very touching post. It sounds like Mr Healey had a lot of fun while he was ill, so at least we can assume he passed away a happy man. Nonetheless, RIP and my condolences to you, it's never easy when a friend passes away.

RIP Hammerwerfer

I think he was a Dub?

We had a few exchanges a few years ago on PH about the marvels of Sheriff St.

He was a pretty mean wheelman too, IIRC

Ed was American but married to an Irish girl . he spent many years living in Germany though, which was where I met him. He most certainly was a superb wheelman.

I remember it now. He was genuinely stunned when he first went down Sheriff St. a notorious Dublin 'hood'. He was approached by a woman wheeling a pram, who was selling a few wraps of heroin!

A genuine car nut, and very generous with his knowledge to us lesser PH'ers.

Damn, as soon as I saw this I realised I hadn't seen much of him on here recently.

Bad news...my condolences to his family and friends.
