Recommend me a........ good footpump please
Discussion
Looking for a good footpump that inflates at a decent rate, has an accurate gauge and won't piss half the air out of the bit that leaks. Loads on the internet of course but I can't tell how good they are.
NB: Maybe it's me but whenever I use a footpump they either 'walk' away from me -or threaten to fall over. Are there any which have a base you can stand on with your other foot to hold it steady?

The Michelin double barrel foot pump does everything you require - if you insist on blowing your tyres up the 'keep fit' way.
If you're a lazy fellow like me, Sealey make a 12V Heavy Duty pump that does the job much more agreeably.
As much as I love my michelin pump I'm currently on my third. The first wouldn't pump, the second blew a seal in one of the pistons and the 3rd, current one doesn't seem to read the pressure right. If you're a lazy fellow like me, Sealey make a 12V Heavy Duty pump that does the job much more agreeably.
That coupled with the fact it's awkward to open/lock(2 pins to hold it shut opposed to a clip) and I find the valve fiddly has left me unimpressed considering the price.
I almost miss my halfords one

I've always found this, and have therefore always used a track pump. This goes back to my mountain biking days. Bought a track pump from halfords (around £25) about 6-7 years ago, and it still works perfectly. Use it for bike and car. The one I have is a halfords "bikehut" pump. At the time, "bikehut" was the halfords equivilent of Tesco's "finest" range. EDIT: and it seems as though that is still the case.....

If you really want a foot pump I can't help you... I've used many but never a good one. These work much better IMO.

The ridiculous pins that hold it closed should have won some kind of "dunce design" award, they are crap.jon- said:

Echo that. I bought a Michelin pump on the basis of a good name That coupled with the fact it's awkward to open/lock(2 pins to hold it shut opposed to a clip) and I find the valve fiddly has left me unimpressed considering the price.

Crikey, I never thought a bicycle pump would be up to doing cars, or even fit. That's interesting, and could be easier to use than the 'balancing on one leg while hanging on to the side of the car' type. You sure the valve fitting fits cars too?I'm not keen on the buzzy 12V ones - they seem very slow and bulky.

FAR, FAR better than any crappy foot pump.

The valves are usually the reverse type which are much much nicer to use and don't forget, racers can have tyre pressures upwards of 100psi so as a rule, bicycle pumps can pump to much higher pressures.Simpo Two said:

I bought one of these Michelin twin pumps, within a few weeks one of the piston seals blew, now even the cylinder that's not blown isn't putting any air in the tyre. Utter rubbish and totally unfit for purpose. That one replaced innumerable single piston pumps that hardly have enough structural integrity to stand up on flat tarmac, let alone take a few hearty leg thrusts.
The complete lack of choice in useable footpumps is really shocking. I do have a Ring inflator that works off the fag lighter socket, that's fine for moderns, but no good whatsoever for classics.
So, three years after the original question, can I repeat it: are there any DECENT foot pumps out there, ie not Argos/Michelin/Halfords, as they're all the same and all as pants as each other?

Yes.. bike tyre valves are one of two typres, schrader and presta. This pump automatically fits both. Car tyres are always schrader. Track pumps actually have better pumping ability than foot pumps in my experience.
Actually having bought said pump it didn't fit so I gave it to a friend with a bicycle.Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
