Hello

Ok here it goes. 2 days ago i bought a car at a auction. The car came with number plates on it.

The thing is i wanted to do a hpi check on the car and the hpi company's kept saying they cant get the car details. so i rang the dvla and gave them the reg number and they said the number plate that is bolted to the car is no longer assigned to the car as it had a private plate on it from new to now.

so it would seem the old owner has just taken the private plate transferred it to their new car and just bolted the old reg back on.

So i have a car with no number plate belonging to it.

The young lady at the dvla did not seem to know what to do. She said to send of a v888 form. The thing is a v888 is just a form about getting details about the car.

She has told me the plate on the car has been destroyed.

I am going to contact the auction company but cant till Monday.

When you remove a private number plate do the dvla not give the car a new number number plate or put the old one back on ?

TIA
I am not driving the car at the moment as it has no tax.

Give the DVLA the VIN number of the car. It'll be somewhere in the engine bay on a metal plaque or if the car has original windows, it'll be next to the water mark.

The VIN always stays the same. Otherwise find out what the private plate was and give that to them, chances are that the plate is still valid and the owner has just not got round to telling the DVLA to retain it etc.

Sorry i did not explain it very well.
The old owner has transfered their private number plate and is on their new car at the moment. but my car has no reg belonging to it. It just has the plate bolted to it that was on it when the car left the showroom (Not the old owners private plate) but it is no longer assigned to my car.
Hope that makes sense.

Not the end of the world.

If you have the vin number then you can find out from hpi what the original
plate of the car was,and it should just be a matter of applying for a new v5 in your name for the original number plate for the car.

If for any reason this doesn't work then the auction company are obliged to refund your money(you usually pay them an indemnity inclued in their fees)

+1.
The DVLA will have a record of the number it's got at the moment somewhere.

You see thats the thing the dvla have told me there is no number plate belonging to the car at the moment. The old owners private number plate has been re transfered to their new car and my car has no number plate belonging to it.

That's fine. Before the private plate was issued the car had another generic plate on it.

Think of it this way - say your car had A123ABC on it, and then the old owner put A1AAA on it. When he sold it and transferred the plate, your car would revert back to A123ABC.

Just do what the other folks have said and ring the DVLA with your VIN. They'll sort things out for you.

The seller really should have told you that it was unregistered, but I'd imagine they can allocate the same number it was originally registered with.

I'm not sure that's possible. When the plate is transferred from the car it is automatically assigned a new plate, generally the one it had to start from.

Sounds like one of two things has happened. Either

1) The owner hasn't actually transferred the personal plate from the car, maybe all he's done is move the physical number plate and be under the impression that's all he needs to do.

or

2) The DVLA have fked up somehow and not assigned the new plate to the car properly when the transfer was done.

The old owner has transfered the prive plate as when i try to do a hpi on the private plate it comes back as on a vw touran. My car is a honda s2000. The plate bolted to my s2000 at the moment is the generic plate not the privte plate. I only know the car had a private plate as the dvla told me and is on the service book. I think the dvla have messed up.

It is possible that the seller put the cherished number on the car new at first registration.
If this has happened, then when the DVLA did the transfer they will have given the donor car a date/area related plate to put on it.
If they have no record of it then the cherished plate might be still assigned to the car you have bought, in which case it is your property.

Something odd going on
Doesn't hpi just need the code off the v5?
As said when you remove the private plate it should revert to the original reg.

Yep something very odd is going on.
To do a hpi you need the reg as well
I thought the old reg would have went back on aswell but it seems that reg has been destroyed by the dvla

Something sounds odd. When I wanted to move my plate to a new car, the old car had to be assigned an alternate plate before they would let me do it. Under most circumstances, the car should be able to revert to the plate it had when it was sold as new.

You say that this plate is no longer available. If that is the case, the DVLA should have assigned a completely new plate to the car before allowing the personal plate to be transferred off.

How can they auction the car when the reg number isn't available?

OP, you can delete all the edits at the bottom of the page when you edit the post before clicking submit, just looks a bit tidier!

It doesn't revert to the old plate - that plate dissapears or is reassigned when the previous owner put on his private plate. You will be reassigned a new plate but it will be of the same year and letter prefix for your car i.e when it was first registered.

The car should have been assigned a new registration when the previous owner reassigned his private reg

Not quite true - unless the old plate has been used for a specific reason such as being sold by the DVLA, it will revert. If the plate has been sold it will be replaced with one from the same year.

This is in the text of the DVLA guidance on number plate changes and has been the case every time I have changed my car in the UK.

In any case, if the DVLA have transferred a number OFF the vehicle, it won't have been left without a number.

Just incase someone hasn't realised

VIN number is the big long one on a little metal plate not the short number on a big plastic plate
