After falling in love with the XK180 concept car (the green one that Jeremy Clarkson said sounded like it had The Prodigy playing in the exhaust pipe), I put a deposit on its cut-down successor, the F-Type. That was two years ago and nothing has happened. Even my local Jaguar dealers have no news. Worryingly though, the photos of the silver one that led me to put £250 down have now been replaced with an artist's impression of something that looks like a Boxster. Jaguar, what the F is the point of wasting time making gorgeous prototype cars like the XK180 and F-type, getting loads of orders and interest, then doing nothing?
Fear not Simpo One - all is in hand. Just don't expect to be picking up your new F-Type this side of several years time!!
If you want more info on F-Type, I can only suggest you keep your eyes on the motoring press. Between leaks to the motoring press and Jag's intentional press releases, I think most of the specs for the car have been revealed now.
Still, look on the bright side. If you put your deposit down 2 years ago (when it was introduced at the 2000 Detroit motor show??) you'll be very high on the order list. On the down side however, the interest you could have earned on that £250 deposit would have probably paid for the car by the time it's actually released!!

Why oh why oh why didn't they stick to the front-engined layout? The XK180 and F-Type concepts (both front engined) were gorgeous.
Personally, I'd have like to see the production F-Type
look exactly like the concept, then turn the new XK8/R into the XK180 (much more sporting than at present). For those that need back seats, Jaguar could introduce the stunning R-Coupe.
What they really need is me running their product line-up ;-)

At least it kept it out of the stockmarket crash, so that's £250 I saved (sigh).
So instead of a front- engined Jag I'm going to get a mid-engined Boxter am I? Terrific. Will have to stick with Griff 500 for now. Then go sideways to Marcos or up to DB7 )

Actually Aston Martin were researching a mid engine layout for their next generation baby Aston. It was a no go but Jaguar took that research and developed it into the F-Type. This kind of cross research is what the PAG is all about and it has saved time and money.
I wonder what other sort of cross vehicles we will get out of PAG now? What's the betting on a 4X4 all terrain Jaguar now that Porsche have one??!

Well, look at the bright side. The last time Jaguar made a mid engined car, it was quite the vehicle. Anyone remember the XJ220? Enough gloom and doom, I say we give the boys a chance and see what they come up with. Certainly can't be worse than the rest of the tripe that Porsche, BMW, (Insert japanese roadster of choice here) have come up with lately...
Besides, other than a vieled rumor on Road and Track (which I trust about as far as I can throw) I have yet to see any real weight given to this mid engined concept. Certainly the Jaguar owners mag has been decidedly quiet about it (which is NOT thier style - they traditionally pump up all Jaguar decisions as the best thing since sliced bread).
Cheers

Yep - Adeewuff's got the same info as me. It was reported by Autocar earlier this year that Aston had started to develop a mid-engined platform for the new small car whilst Jaguar were pressing ahead with the front engined route. At least someone had the sense (IMO) to say that Aston's should have their engines in the front, but instead of sharing the F-Type platform they decided to do a swap.
Hmm, personally I'd prefer to see both F-Type and "new DB4", as Autocar have called it, sharing a front engined layout. Still, the proof's in the pudding and I hope Jaguar make it a success. I just hope someone didn't think that a little of the F1 halo effect would rub off on a mid-engined production car. If that's the case it probably won't make it out of the factory before conking out!!!

Well Volvo now have the XC90 and given their propensity for relaesing turbo-nutter estate cars I guess the XC90 'R' might be on the cards?

The car which had a stonking 6 litre V12 in prototype form and then a Metro engine in road going version?
I attempted to remove the saleswomans arm when I first saw the F-Type. It was even better that the XK180. Put a manual in it and I'll have one right now. Just a prototype? OK, let me know the moment you have any information about it. Have I heard anything? Have I !
Now they are redesigning it? Oy, noooooo!
