We've all noticed the ads that appear in the threads on our beloved GS! I clicked on one to minutes ago, it was for Telewest Broadband, asked me for my postcode, I was directed to NTL, went to the NTL site, put in my postcode and was directed back to fg Telewest! WTF! Is there anyone who can explain what the hell that is all about?!?!?! I was about to make them (and Ted) some money, but they can take their cable modems and shove them as far up their...

I'm going to bed!

LOL!

I think thats their polite way of saying no you cant have it! Me and my mate were talking about it the other day, cos he has Telewest and he asked me to put my postcode in (even though I know I cant get it), and sure enough it suggests NTL. I just knew then that the other site would do the same.

Go for ADSL, u wont regret it!

I believe that Telewest and NTL are connected in some way financially (its a very grey area of exactly who owns who). The simplist method is to ring them on customer services. I had an advert for broadband with NTL long before it was actually available. I rang them and asked for it and they wrote to me personnaly to tell me when I could have it. (which was nice )

BT ADSL was very expensive compared to NTLs broadband (although i know they have recently dropped the price) at the time of buying I got NTL 512Kb BB, Modem rental, Telephone rental, Digital TV (incl entertainment pack) for LESS than the rental of just the box for BT.

Well NTL are a bunch of total F*ckwits who couldn't find their arses with both hands, and I'm guessing Telewest probably aren't any better...

One of my work mates will second that.

He waited 3 months for the aforementioned company to perform the tests and make a bloody great hole in his wall, then to back-peddle and tell him that he can't get ADSL in his road/area.

Subsequently he phoned BT (after I recommended OpenWorld) and was promptly connected and up an running withing 3 weeks of the phone call.

IT is pretty simple, ntl have franchise areas, telewest have franchise areas. within these franchise areas they can provide bundled telephony, TV, broadband services etc.

Point is they are both commercial organisations and therefore have to weigh up the pro's and cons of delivering service to a new customer unless you are in an area with cable running past your door. I short if it costs £500 to put the service in to a home and the likely revenue is £15 a month then it may not be worth doing.

BT on the other hand are legally obliged and regulated to provide services. If you live in the middle of nowhere and it would cost £15,000 to install a phone line then they have to bear the cost.

It is just a shame we live in the middle of nowhere, where bT cannot even provide adsl. If I were in an ntl or telewest franchise then I would certainly pay £12 over my normal phone line charge for broadband internet, cable TV and cheaper phone calls!

Satellite broadband (it's not DSL -- that uses phone lines) has the big drawback of having no return channel -- it's download only. You have to use a modem to upload.

Fixed wireless broadband is becoming available in certain areas, especially rurally because of the distance from the excha nge (DSL only works when you're 3-5 miles, depending on DSL type, or less of the telephone exchange).

Does that help?

BT are not obligated to provide service anymore. As for ADSL they will only provide service if you live within a certain distance of an ADSL equipped exchange (distance basically depends on the type/quality of cable between you and the Exch.)

At the last estimate is only available to approx. 15% of the land mass of the UK.
This from their Openworld site:
quote:

The availability of ADSL service at a specific location is subject to technical limitations and survey. Service availability in an area is constrained geographically and is subject to change. BT Video Stream and BT Date Stream availability are subject o contract.

BT, NTL, Telewest and all the rest are bigger con-artists than Arfur Daley ....and people wonder why their pensions have gone down the drain.

Agree re cable companies.

The problem is that wire-based broadband technologies only work over relatively short distances. Fixed wireless broadband (FWB) comes into its own in areas where populations are less densely-packed. Its start-up costs are high because of the big transmitters etc you need so it's usually going to be more expensive -- obviously, the more people are available to spread the cost over, the cheaper it gets per consumer. So there comes a point where even FWB isn't worth doing either -- eg places like the Yorkshire Dales, Shropshire, Scotland (apart from the cities)... That said, there are moves to get FWB set up in some of those areas (the Scottish islands I believe is one) with government help.

Outside of that though, the only alternative is satellite. Unfortunately, it's expensive and one-way only as I mentioned.

Check out www.adslguide.org.uk.
You can find info regarding any broadband connection, but mainly its for ADSL. also, www.broadband.co.uk has some info. I have DSL at work and it costs me just over £40 per month, but I have some static IP's so it cost me a light more. I think from April it will be done to £20 per month (or thereabouts). I am with a company called Freedom to Surf. I got the wires only connection and set it up myself. Its not hard, but sounds it at first!

You could always get two or three modems and subscribe to an ISP who allows multiple connections (see windows help file for proper terminology!!).

Apparently the wireless stuff is still a little unreliable so seems expensive for something that only works sometimes (i.e. like a TVR, only kidding!! )

This is the thing that is really p*ssing me off!!! NTL and BT have put broadband in around Glasgow, Edinburgh etc and the majority off people in those ares I would say are using it!
I know for a fact that both companies are moving the service slowly in my general direction, but both have got about 20miles out and just stopped! They are refusing to bring oit down any further!! I have heard a rumor that BT have out it in Irvine which is about 10/15 miles away, and a BT Engineer I know said they have done work in an Exchange 7 miles away, I have an exchange near my backdoor, which would give BT about 200+customers but they don't seem interested in putting it there!!! I can't see how it wouldn't be cost effective, it's not like I live in the middle of nowhere, it's the Central Belt, Ok, I'm at the edge, but so are thousands of other people!!
These people are only ever interested in one thing! Profits!

Homechoice operate over a limited area but my ADSL line, provided by them, costs only £20 per month and like Ronseal does everything it says on the box. Interestingly they sent a BT man to instal it.
