Just got the latest issue of EVO, amongst many other cars they are testing a Merc E500, reading the spec I noticed that ( unsurprisingly!!! ) the top speed is limited to 155mph. There are a surprisingly large number of performance vehicles that are limited to this figure of 155 ( Not TVRs though ), anyone any ideas where this magic figure comes from ?????
Andy.

The eurogoons put a whetted finger in the air and came up with 250kph (250kph=155mph).

This only regards German cars.
I guess it's the only way German manufacturers have found to give a politically correct image of themselves, given that there are still unrestricted Autobahn sections.

I think Jag may be doing it now as well. Still, who cares?

When I were lad 'supercar' status was achieved when the car in question could top 150mph. Perhaps if they limit them to 155mph it tips them into 'supercar' territory and makes them feel better?

What's the criteria for 'supercar' now - 200mph?

If we set the new supercar limit to 400kph that would equate to around 250mph.

By my reckoning, there are no manufacturers yet able to qualify to the 'new' supercar status - manufacturers, its over to you now.!!!

I've had three cars with limiters - none of them have shown any sign of slowing at the designated figure.

My present car has a 155 limiter (M3 E46) and continues to accelerate through 175 with no problem at all (Visit Bruntingthorpe airfield if you want to try this!!) By the way, I have an AP-22 'performance monitor' and the speedo is pretty accurate. (+/- 2%)

I spoke the the manufactures, and they said "bring it in sir, we'll have a look" You can imagine my response

I'm pretty sure David is right 155 mph = 250 kph and that just seemed as good a figure as any.

They did a similar thing with bikes, I cant remember if it was the top speed or engine output they limited, but it was a gentlemans agreement between the companies nothing official.

Of cource this has all gone out the window and we now have the likes of the 200mph+ megabusa and I must say I think we are all the better for it.

I believe the orignal reason was the governments / EEC wanted to govern cars and make it law, but by the time it watered down to actual actions many manafacturers agreed to self controls, so as long as they dont take the mick, the eec wont bring in laws.

There had been some trouble with police cars not being able to keep up.....

If I was prime minister, all cars would be limited to 80mph but it could be easily disabled. That way, car enthusiasts would be able to go quickly but idiots would not attempt to overtake me at 125mph in their Renault Scenic.

Obviously disabling would be restricted to people who had relatively decent cars and did not display a Max Power sticker.

Is 155mph anything to do with tyre ratings, perhaps? Just a thought.

I have a vague recollection of seeing an engineering program where they talked about it. Something to do with Aerodynamics....basically its the speed even a brick will become airborne..?
