Hi all,

In the process of doing work to my Mk2 XR2, and in my efforts to keep everything completely standard, I need to source a new number plate. The rear (yellow) plate has started to get dirt in between the clear plastic and the yellow backing. It got picked up by my MOT man so needs sorting.

The plate is the original that came with the car and, as such, has the slightly different font (Charles Wright 1935) than you get these days (post 2001). The width of each letter has been reduced from 57mm to 50mm. I want the 57mm

Now I know that number plates sold after 2001 need to meet this, that and the other regulations so that johnny penguin doesn't get carbon'd to death, but I am genuinely only trying to keep the authentic style plate font, not modify it in any other way.

Does anyone know where I can find a place that will do these sorts of plates. Either in the South West, online or delivered would be great.

Thank in advance

Fancy Plates will do it for you but you have to specify the plate as 'fancy' and pay a fair bit for it. Make up the plate you want then put in the special requirements box 'pre-2001 style font' and I can guarantee they will follow your request. www.fancyplates.com

Surely the font you want isnt the pre 2001 font - my 1999 Mondeo had the pre 2001 font and it was different to the font used in the late 80's.

I bought my last 2 sets of plates from ebay, I dont know if you can get the typeface you need but mine didnt meet the new spec, no BS number , manufacturer etc. Even got the euro flag with a black background, looks much better.
Probably where all the ringers and clones get them from.

There was no standard font though - that's what the new version introduced. Many variations were produced prior to that, they just had to meet the size/stroke/spacing requirements and be easy to read (no stupid italics, etc.).

Hi, this is an old post but I have a friend that asked me the same question today. Where did you get the plates from. A quick Google search and we ended up on http://www.gbshowplates.co.uk and they have loads of fonts but they do not mention actual font names?

We have found the charles wright font became the preferred font circa 2001 and was the standard "car" font used from April 2002.

So where can we buy plates with the older style?

I am thinking next on the list is trying a signwriter.

Bit of a thread resurrection but does anyone know where I can get a pre 2001 plate from? I've tried all the links mentioned above and they will only do current style ones.

Just for the sake of anyone who finds this old thread via Google, go and check out Retroplates on Instagram to get some suitable pre-2001 plates made up.
