Small Registration Plates
Discussion
Slightly off-topic, but my Alfa has an alternative to unreadable number plates that still defeats plod with lasers on motorway bridges.
The front number plate is mounted at an angle facing downwards towards the road. From any elevated position such as a motorway bridge, it is virtually edge on!
I reckon it must be legal as all similar Alfas of the same vintage are mounted like this.

Woof, from September last year the issueing of number plates has been strictly regulated.
All number plates now contain the postcode of the seller so that the Police can check up on any that don't conform to the new set of allowable fonts.
You also now need to show your V5 to get a number plate made up so I guess the only way you can get a 'small' plate is if your V5 proves that you have a grey import with only a small plate area?
Cheers....... Andrew

Andrew,
This may be law, but it ain't the way things are.
I today (via the net) ordered a set of plates to my spec (ie no text, small size, my spacing, and certainly no postcode).. this is to go on my new car.
To become a leagally driveable vehicle, the V5 must be shown, but not the plates, they can be added after.
This is no problem for the dealer. (Who suggested it) - my plates being added the day I pick the car up.

Serck Radiator Services, if you need less than 3.125 inch digits ask for Motorcycle plates.
Explain that you only want the plates for show use, that enables them to do black and white/polished alloy for post 1976 where legally you need reflective, to use M/C digits or to trim down to an illegal margin size.
Expect to be stopped frequently if you fit them, to be targetted by traffic wardens and, if you have an accident, expect insurance quibbles. Although the original Lotus Elite had approval to mount individual digits on a black mesh radiator grill a friend who became intimate with a tree whilst driving his Super 95 had his insurance claim rejected and took two years to obtain a settlement.
PS
If any Elite driver is worried I, out of goodness of heart will give their car a good home.
