What I'd really like is fire coming out of my exhaust pipes. How do I do that?
There have been drives where I'm positive something must be going on back there, but I can never manage to concentrate on the rearview mirror at the apposite moment - braking hard and slamming down through the gears for a corner. I'm doing that heel and toe thing, incidentally.

It happens when unburnt fuel ignites in the exhaust manifold. You see it quite often in touring cars - fuel is still pumped into the engine when the throttle is closed.
I wanted to modify a Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo to do just that a few years ago but was warned that I would destroy the catalytic converters rather quickly.
I think there was a home made kit you could make which involved drilling a hole in the exhaust, downwind of the cat, and wiring in a spark plug. Fuel could be fed in from a small reservoir and ignited from a switch in the cockpit. A DIY conversion for the brave.
Have fun!

Also, you'd need a system with free flowing silencers rather than baffles, as they would stop any flame travelling up the exhaust. Either that, or give it time, it'll have burnt a way through the baffles.
Oh, and as you say, the cat(s) would be toast before too long.

Hmm, for brave read "Stupid". Sounds a bit Max Power to me, I'm afraid.

Bit daft/MaxPower wanting this if you ask me.
1, Waste of fuel - you have seen the price of it these days?!
2, If you do acheive this you may then not get the car through it's emmissions test on an MOT due to the extra hydrocarbons etc.
Why not just buy somthing shiney out of that glass cabinet in Halfords instead?

My brother in law had this done to his 345bhp Escort Cosworth recently ... it involved a coil in the boot, drilling the exhaust, tapping it and putting a spark plug in. It's set up somehow for the spark to be repeatedly, erm, sparking, so on overrun it blows this huge flame out the back every time ("off" switch in the cabin, just in case you're being followed by a copper !)
If you want I can ask him who fitted it ?
Oh, and he lives in Essex, and his boot is full of "bass bins" by the way. Just in case this is relevant

It does work just fine, but can give flameouts several feet long, and is more than likely very illegal
Just drill a hole in the exhaust, screw in a spark plug and wire up. F*** knows what it does to the back pressure/silencers though!
Trust the Americans to go one better I understand that they have some kind of gas canister in the boot rigged up to the exaust with the same spark plug type arangement your talking about.
In the photos you can see the flames reach about 25-30foot, just the thing to get rid of tailgaters.
Its used mainly on kustoms for show purposes.

How dare you lot call me Max Power?!!
I'm thinking Le Mans.
I'm thinking angry bursts, stabs if you will, lighting the empty road behind at three in the morning.
What I'm not talking about is twenty feet of batmobile-style rear-pointing flamethrower.
AAarrr shame, I just found a link http://hammer.prohosting.com/~backwood/buick1.html
If I try really really hard (in other words max it through the gears) my TVR 400se spits flames, but only little ones and not any great distance. My wife says they are bright blue and on a dark night I can see the flash in my mirror.
It also farts and pops and bangs and gurgles and howls and makes the hair on my neck stand up just by starting it up.
and now the weekend is coming and it's nearly time to play............
