The next time either of us (me or my father) are expressing disbelief at what TVR drivers put up with this anecdote :
www.bmwcca.org/Roundel/1999/0899oth.htm
(last 6 paragraphs) might come in handy. Apparently it relates to my dad hard nosed businessman or what ! Though some of the details are a bit out - perhaps there's more than one numpty who went through this !!! Anyone else ever gone in all guns blazing only to be totally sidelined and end up buying yet more stuff you don't want and can't afford from the very dealership you went in to complain to ?

I recently bought a book called 'Backfire', which is a collection of articles and diary entrys (on motoring) by the late Alan Clark.

His motley collection of cars ranged from early chain driven things, to modern cars like his trusty 911.

Apparently, he was always discussing ways of thinning down the collection - either discussing lists of '6 cars he could do without' or '6 cars he had to keep. During once such discussion his 'phone rang, and he returned from the call having just bought another Bentley!

The book is a good read - slightly skewed towards 'vintage' stuff - and gives an amusing, if differnt perspective on Petrolheadism.

Jaydee,

Was that really your dad? If I can end my days with only half of the motoring experiences that you and your father have had then I will be happy man....

I dont know if you sometimes find it dull, but to the rest of us it is utterly facinating....

Cheers,

Paul

I'm not totally convinced - but dad is insistent and we certainly went over to Germany to see the people at BMW motorsport when I was about 14/15 - I seem to recall getting told off for leaning on a mid-engined Guigaro design (M1 prototype ?) by my dad, only to be handed the keys and told to have a poke round if I wanted .
I've been getting relentless motoring anecdotes for the last few days. It's not so much that it's dull, just that dad is taking pain killers, sleeping all day then lively and ready to chat just when I want to go to bed !!!

Gassing at 2-30AM, up again at 6-30, not sure my -don't be perceived as showing off too much and aggravate the locals-filter's firing on all cylinders. Sorry

Know exactly what you mean Jaydee - I find that dropping round for dinner to my parents with a good bottle of red wine almost always removes the "All those old stories are boring" defense - even now after 40 years my mother is claiming that she's never heard the odd story before and the ones we have heard before a great anyway.

Just goes to reinforce the need to remind ourselves to get out there and "live life", then with a bit of luck we can shock our children ocasionally.....

Friend of mine took part in one of the round the world sailing races.... now has son in New Zealand.... salutory lesson there...

I don't have any children either jaydee, but look forward to the possibility when I can regale them with tales of their grandfather and hopefully the odd one of my own...
