what do you think of the new MR2?
Discussion
Well I'm not really one for Jap cars, but I.M.O I liked the fixed head model before, the new one looks a bit girly for me. And a bit under powered for my liking.
But, a guy at work test drove one and said it was a lot of fun. But he did go on to buy an MGF Trophy 160 in the end.
Horses for courses really.

My Mum had a new style MR2 for a while and my dad had an SW20 (MK2)T-Bar for about a year.
I preferred the lines of the old shape MR2, and to me it seemed better screwed together.
The Stereo in the mk2 was excellent but all the panels buzzed in the new roadster when you turned it up.I thought the interior on the roadster was a bit too basic, Too much like one of those funky french vans, and the glove box rattled (Which they all apparently do).
My Dad preferred his mk2 driving wise, but because he needed a big car and we were moving they sold both of them.He would still love a mk2 though.
I drove my Dad's one and thought it was a good fun car, and gave feedback a bit like my old Manta I had.
If I was to get one, it would have to be one of the last of the line mk2s, I wouldn't consider the Roadster as it is too much like the MGF styling wise, and is totally impractical.
That's just me though.

Wouldn't bother with the new MR2 myself - but it does depend on what you want........
From what I've seen / read / heard, it's become more like an asthmatic donkey than a drivers mid engine roadster as per the previous MR2's
The MR2 (brand new) retails at around the £19k for a car bought in the UK, with the 2nd hand price coming in at around £15k for a 00(W) reg car. To me, that is a lot of money!
You might want to look at the Fiat Coupe and possibly the Alfa Romeo GTV (3.0l)
Hope this is of some use!

I looked at the new MR2 briefly before going for my Elise. I think the first thing that struck me about the MR2 was the complete lack of storage space! It was little enough to make the Lotus look practical!!!!
As for performance, I would say the MR2 would hold it's own against most laddy street fodder. But against proper sports car i.e. TVR, Lotus etc etc... it hasn't got a hope in hell.
For the price though it's fair enough for a new sports car, however, you could buy something secondhand with far more poke and a less girly image.

I can echo most of what has been said already.
1 dissapointing performance
2 excellent handling
3 storage is terrible, two people couldn't travel with more than a day or two's worth of luggage.
4 I think styling is quite nice, but does lean towards pretty.
Treacle has had hers for about 14 months and is very happy with it. Maybee the power of my Chimaera makes her MR2 feel a bit tame but I'm convinced that my 97' MX5 was quicker - and that was only a 1.6i
It is very reliable however and we have not had any reliability problems - only covered 4k though. Very 'easy' car to drive superlight steering and pedals etc.

Hmmm it's ok, but I think it's still a wannabe boxster.... As mentioned an alfa gtv 3.0 v6 would paste it into the ground, great to drive...
That or a trophy 160 MGF, it is slightly flawed in the driving position compared to the mr2, but the power and grip would leave the mr2 in dust on a back road...

At risk of attracting flames here, but I wouldn't touch a GTV V6.Having hired one in Italy and driven it hard for several weeks I would have to say that although it is extraordinarily fast, particularly taking into account its cost, the chassis can't handle the power. The dominant situation is understeer but torque steer and wheel spin are also happy to join the party. The Alfa may well also give you the opportunity to find out just how useful Alfa's warranties are, the build isn't in the same league as the MR2.
If it was my money, and taking into account insurance issues - which I assume are a factor, I would have an MX5. A sweeter handling car you couldn't hope to find and it will serve as an ideal training ground for rear wheel drive without, hopefully, getting you into trouble. You could argue it's a bit "girly," but no more so than the MR2, or a bit slow but it will wipe the floor with most cars cross country.
