There was a proram on TV Friday evening about accident black spots, I expect most of you turned off as Puny Mammory was presenting it.
It looked at the problems caused by icy road conditions, in particular roads where certain patches got icy and had caused a number of crashes.
Anyway the point is, I seem to remember a thread asking about catseyes which seemed to light up on certain roads a while back. The program explained that the icy sections had cats eyes installed that had a temperature sensor built in and when the temp went down to 3 deg or under the catseyes flashed blue.
Seems like a good idea, however the cost seemed to be putting of most authorities who felt that gritting was cheaper.

Seems like a very good idea - so they won't do it! Once upon a time, going to a wedding when we had our last decent summer, quite a lot of the tarmac had melted.
The road was well sanded though....but, I said to myself, that's funny looking sand...
Stopped, opened the door, and touched the surface with my finger. Licked it, and sure enough it was salt. Miles and miles of salt...in July! Mixture of tar and salt impossible to remove from car!
Why did they do that? Must have wasted thousands of pounds. Local Authorities have weird ideas, so I don't think we'll get the superblue catseyes here!

We have some of those flashing cats-eyes out here in Lincolnshire. I don't know if it was a trial or what, but on the A15 just outside Cranwell there is a stretch of about a mile with them in. They are clever enough to flash blue when it's cold, but normally are a bright white. I think they are supposed to do something else in fog, but not sure. They are battery powered but have a solar charging cell in them so should never have to change the battery. They have been installed for a couple of years now and still seem fine, none have failed........yet !!
