OK, i'll keep it short, i've got 35k burning a hole in my pocket and I'm about throw it in the direction of a 993

Is there anything better to do with 35K, or is this the first sane decision of my life

p.s. don't bother with the Tiv v Porsche thing

All I can say is go and drive the Tamora!! I was seriously considering buying a Boxster but once I drove the Tamora I was smitten.

You could also try the Honda S2000 which is excellent.
My golden rule for buying this type of car is to buy what you like the best, compromise is something you should do on a tight budget for an everyday car and NOT when you are spending £35K on the Car of your dreams.

It's not a TVR v Porsche thing at all, they are completely different cars IMO. Have a go at everything you can get for £35K. Here's a few that I have tried:-

1 Porsche (993, Boxster etc.)
2 TVR (Tamora, Cerbera, Tuscan)
3 Maserati 3200GT
4 Honda S2000
5 Jag XK8
6 Noble M12 (with a bit of finance!!)

etc. etc.

all of these can be got for around £35K

Good Luck!!

Tricky one. If you're after a good driving experience try a Tuscan, Cerbera and a Tamora. I chose a Tuscan out of those three after driving a Boxster and a 911 as well (I didn't drive a Tamora btw - I saw the first press photos and ran screaming down the dealer to put my money on a Tuscan). I think the 911 would be by second choice and I wouldn't bother with a Boxster (over rated in my opinion).

Other than that - I don't think much else will come close. Have fun!

A couple of nights ago whilst driving home (late), I saw two very bright headlamps in the rear view growing ever larger. Not close enough to warrant a brake test, just not showing quite enough respect I had no intention of racing along this fast twisty dark road, but decided to give the car behind an acceleration demonstation upon exiting the next mini-roundabout. I was amazed when the car behind pretty much stayed with me. Upon turning into my drive I had a good look at what had been following me and saw it to be an S2000. A bit miffed to have been matched by a 2ltr I had to have a read of the cars stats in the back of Evo. Felt a bit better after that, because the performance of that engine is very impressive.

My wife was after a Honda S2000 but a colleague of hers who had driven one said it was much like the other Hondas (Prelude etc) that you had to revv the nuts off it to get it to go.. I remember driving Preludes myself and getting a bit frustrated with the torque curve giving you not a lot at low revs then piling it all on once you were above about 3000-3500rpm.

Just my 2p worth..
Cheers
Matt.

Just getting rid of my S2000 after 2 years - to be honest it doesn't feel gutless low down as alot of people seem to commment. Tried it against Elise, Boxster and Chimp 4.0 and all flet very similar power wise. With airbox opened up (6 clips) ala elise it sounds amazing!! 9000rpm is very addictive. However you should definetly test them . I rented all for a weekend (except the Honda).
My main want was to be able to tailslide at will (and safely) and a great engine noise, the S2000 fufilled this better than any of the others. Great brakes too.

Ultra Violent - you could go and buy the car of your dreams, a wonderful, powerful sports car, or you could go the Max Power route and buy a Saxo for £10k and spend the other £25K making it look ridiculous

Edited to add: Make sure you spend the £25K on styling and ICE, not on anything to improve the performance

Could you get an early LHD 993 Turbo 4 for 35k?? I bet that'd be a depreciation beater. With the exception of the early (70's) 911s this is the one I'd go for.

I've always thought of the S2000 as a sensibly priced Boxster alternative. Nearly identical performance etc.

Regarding the S2000 - in a straight line my girlfriend's std TT225 is the same in terms of speed (tried it on the A34). Now her TT is NOT as quick as my Chimaera esp. low down - but you have to expect an S2000 or a TT to keep up with you for a bit if it's high up the rev range (S2000) or on boost (TT) though. Keep you foot down and you'll beat 'em!!!

Strangely her TT also kept a V8s in line recently along a DC (I was driving and I know the TVR was trying). I'll put that one down to a sick TVR!

Then you should go for it right now! 993 is the best and most beautifull of modern porsches, but a turbo 4x4 it's an awesome, mind blowing performance supercar! And the looks...!
Just forget about those water cooled vulgar and fat cars called 996! What a depreciation for 911's!

GO FOR IT! You wont regret it!

And a 993 Carrera2 can, just with a big effort, be compared to those tiv's (except for the gorgeous Tuscan) it can never be compared to an S2000 (wich I love, but...).

Excellent idea!!

Then you hang around Mcdonalds, and come in your pants when I show up the TVR (had this every time I went up to get the food in my Cerbera!!)

To complete the "twat effect" don't forget to do burn-outs in the car park and wear a baseball cap backwards like a complete d*ckhead!! Remember to say to yourself as you drive along with the stereo booming "I look really cool" even though everyone else in the traffic is thinking "look at that w*nker"
Don't forget to recline the front seats as far as possible. The car must be uncomfortable as possible to be cool.

Alternatively get a proper fast car and not something that looks like your Sisters car with a set of stupid alloys on!!

I have looked at LHD cars and i'm not that comforatble with them, although this may be due in part to a recent cab ride (in a shagged out LHD car) and the guy nearly kill me. This will also be my first 'proper' car and i'm happy to work up to the big stuff (i.e. 993TT). If all goes well this year i'll upgrade in 12 months.

What I was actually more interested in (not clear in my post) was things other than cars to spend 35K on. Women and alcohol already being considered

Glider flying lessons ? A sense of freedom not even a sportscar on the track can bring and you'd get an awful lot of lessons and flying time for your £35,000.
www.pilots.co.uk/forsale/uaircraft.htm
You could even consider powered flight and get yourself a Cessna within budget-the running costs make a Ferrari look reasonable though

In fact you will get a decent standard 15m glider plus enough lessons to go solo for that. Combine the thrill and freedom of flying without an engine with the adrenalin rush each time you release into the blue and it's hard to beat!

If you want a rush for 2k you can do an AFF course and become a qualified Sky Diver - See the BPA for more info. Then you can do a Scuba Course and qualify out in the Barrier Reef, and go and meet a Great white tet a tet. Also buy yourself a nice cheap (sub 10k) wedge, get it fitted with roll bars and the like, and go and see Mr humphries on a sprint course..

If all that ain't thrilling enough then I don`t know what is.

Ultra Violent wanted suggestions as to what else he could spend 35k on, before taking the plunge and buying a Porsche. I suggested gliding and Jason suggested Scuba because, presumably, we have both enjoyed these pursuits. Perhaps you have some sports/travel/other experience UV could try THE DEATH ?
The discussions before Christmas encouraged me to join this site, the contributions since (elemchukwu esp.) are starting to put me off. Could we post like grown ups please ?
