I'm thinking of buying a lotus exige in the summer as my only car as it offers great thrills for the money, although I hope I won't live to regret it after putting up with lack of storage space and comfort for weekends away! A possible alternative to thrills v comfort would be a Mitsubihi Evo7. Unfortunately the evo lacks that something special - being a tad boxy I guess, probably won't be a future classic like the exige.

What cars did you guys end up getting? I guess some of you have multiple vehicles in order to cover all the bases. A few other cars out there seem to offer a good balance to these opposing criteria. BMW M3 for example, and Audi RS4 etc.

Favorite all round cars anyone?

Not sure what your budget is but a 996 is fantastic, and with a small engine and exhaust upgrade is as fast as my old Speed Six Cerbera, not many cars would stay with it through the twisty bits and in the wet it is great.

Trackday or everyday the 996 is great by far the best car I have every owned.

Roadrunner, on your Exige experiment I can shed a little light as my brother has been down that road for nearly a year now. He replaced his Integra R with a black Exige as his daily driver having been completley hooked by it's addictive personality. Alternatives such as Boxsters, VX220's etc just didn't cut the mustard for him so he took he plunge.

A year later he is still happy ... with a few reservations - family considerations are tricky - frequent yoga sessions to ease ingress / egress are highly recommended, the heating system leaves a lot to be desired - I drove it to Aberdeen today and could do nothing to direct heat to my legs - the optional aircon just does nothing (soon to be replaced by power upgrade I gather) and poor weather conditions such as wind and rain are interesting.

The plus side however is a grin the size of the caledonian canal after any kind of open road fun, city usage is suprisingly easy - everyone moves over for you - having driven it to Skye and back I can say that in my limited experience of high performance motoring nothing I have driven comes close to it's roadholding.

He'll have to replace it one day and when he does there's probably going to have to be a fair amount of therapy required to get him off the drug.....

Oh and on the luggage side of things - toothbrush and spare pair of boxers fit nicely behind the engine and are kept suitably warm!!

Your father doesn't let you drive his car either then !
I can heartily recommend the Porsche 993 it's got a combination of practicality and performance that can only be bettered by the 996 - not as raw as the Exige though. The Elan I owned before it was excellent from this point of view also. I have always had to consider the compromise as I've only recently got a "sensible" saloon from work. The Elan was used everyday and was remarkably reliable and easy to live with. It lived outdoors with no problems-Isuzu engine is superb as far as reliability is concerned.

Still trying to figure out a way to liberate the 996 Jaydee .... I did once escape with his Quattro for six months to London though - trouble is I can't for the life of me remember which excuse I came up for that minor triumph!!

Doing 30+ K miles a year for the business I went for a Golf V5 a few years ago for relaxed and relatively cheap no thrill mile munching - thinking of replacing it soon, perhaps with an X5? Sanity restored during clement weather with an 87 Carrera Cab - although the heating seems to get more use than the air-con here in Scotland!!
