What was your best driving moment ever?
Discussion
All these topics got me thinking... There are cars that look wonderful, cars that sound wonderful and cars that drive wonderful. But above all that, there are wonderful drivers, and everyday drivers! So tell us what was your best driving moment ever. Either on the driving seat or not!
Car: Ferrari 456GT
Place: Customs post Austria/Italy border
Me: Impressionable 18 year old new driver
Driver: My dad
We'd just been held up for over an hour to get out of Austria when the Italian customs pulled us over into the search lane. Oh bugger. A heavily armed guard walks over: "I'll be stopping the traffic for a few minutes. Want to show us what it will do ??"
Next 20 minutes spent in the back with an assortment of Italians taking turns in the passenger seat. You've never seen so many smiling faces. The fat old bloke in the AMG S-class stuck on the other side of the barriers didn't seem too impressed though !

Just run in the new engine and the Bryn Glas tunnels coming up, third gear
Working in Germany and having to drive in some wonderful scenery and getting paid for it.
Driving fron Vancouver to Calgery and back through the rockys must be the tops Seeing a train go in a tunnel and see the front come out before the rear has entered. Lakes many miles long and passing signs for ski resorts when it was 42.

Must be when first drove a sports car ever - a mighty Griffith rented out for 2 days from the TVR Centre in Barnet. That was in June, gorgeous whether drove all the up to Leeds and back with the roof - got sun burned in the process but who cares. I remember being too scared to start in first gear for the first few hours... The previous week-end, someone had crashed the Chimaera I was supposed to have.
That was 7 months ago.. and now I have one. Lucky me

I was about 20 (19 years ago)
Car: 1967 Triumph Vitesse 2.0L (cactus green!)6 Cylinder, Heavilly modified, lower suspension, roll bars, Dunlop alloys, fast road cam, bigger carbs etc etc
It went like stink in a straight line!
Crap round the bends.
Road: A34 (I think) in Dorset, can't remember exactly where, but its a really long uphill straight bit.
My boss had his BRAND NEW , just run in, Porsche 924 (Guards Red!)
He had played with me and teased me all through the bendy bits, but when the straight came and he decided to "blast away from me" I was still there, in fact half way up the hill I blasted past him and the look on his face as my old trumpet creamed his porker was the best moment of my life at that moment!
My diff blew up 16 miles later!

There are really too many excellent moments to pick from, but as a general comment I can highly reccomend the trip to Le Mans.
You can, if you're so inclined and have the right machinery, go balls out racing everything (only on approprate stretches of road, of course). Or, if you choose, criuse along watching all the other exotica belting past.

This afternoon.
Pulling out of a roundabout, road a little bit greasy, I gave it just a little too much welly. The rear Bridgestone SO3s allowed me to know exactly what was happening so I could hold a sideways moment with opposite lock for a second or three before allowing it to straighten up, all under perfect control.
Never had the courage to do that on the public road before: no danger, not going fast and no other cars or obstacles to hit. Now I do believe those tyres are better than the SO2s.

When I was 18 and having a bit of a race with (can`t really remember) an Escort XR3i (I`m in my MK1 MR2)or something I pulled alongside and waved at him, as I did so the revs hit 5000 and the second cam kicked in and launched me up and past him.. It must have looked like I did it on purpose !!
Many but one of note. Some years ago now I was about 18 or 19 driving a 2.8i Capri with a Tickford Turbo conversion, but it looked bog standard. Had another guy in a 2.8i try it on and I just had to let him know what it was all about, when I slowed and he eventually caught up the look on his face was poetic, so I dropped it a cog or two and did it all over again
I expect I'll be reminded of some more later but that is my starter for 10.
EXCEPT!!! For the day I picked up the Chimaera, how a 32 year old can drive down the road punching the air and whooping with delight always makes me smile!

I had first great moment at maybe 15 . A father of a friend was getting out of their garage to check if their rallye 5 GT Turbo was ready to play. I squeezed myself between the bucket seats to a still remainig back seat, grabbed the roll bar and never released it again! He just trashed the car at unbelievable speeds trough very, very narrow roads and always drove sideways as if it was a rear wheel drive car! I was scared! but understood what made the diference between a driver and a pilot.
With my modest skills, I remember having a chat with a 740 beemer while driving a friends Boxster. It was fun until we got to a straight session. Never saw him again.
The same car gave lots of days of pride and joy driving sideways as if I was a hero! Good car, then!
Last of my good moments was a drive in my poor 206 at the road that leads too our nacional car museum. If you ever get to Portugal remember:Caramulo!!! I drove very, very hard that day. Maybe because I was angry with my girl. That shows that it's needless to have a good car to have some good moments. And that remembers me I once had some very happy moments with a miserable Opel (Vauxhall) Astra Van in an old stage of Portugal Rally. I had a friend attached to the roof handle and eyes wide open! In the end of the session, I heard this words comming from is white face:"The car seemed like a pickaxe!"

quote:
Through the Pyrenees in brilliant sunshine six months after I'd got my S4. Absolute heaven!
Chimaera through the Welsh mountains down the A5 shortly after we got it. Heading from England into Snowdonia then on to Anglesey.
No sunshine (in fact misty cloudy and cr*p). Roof off anyway. People waving. Overtaking anything anything and everything down a road in which the only overtaking opportunities are for those with very, VERY quick cars.
Yes yes yes...
About 2 years ago when I driving back from work on good sunny day, top down just feeling good, end up taking this sharp corner at 80 instead of the 65 I normally did. Back wheels hit a bump, wheelspin up and for once I didn't lift but held it in a drift though the corner under power for a good couple of seconds. Fantastic. And yes I've never had the guts to repeat it.
Front wheel drive - Pah!
