Removing Hammerite from ones hand

I put a coat of hammerite on my handbrake lever as some of the paint had come off and it was looking a bit shabby, then went off to finish painting off the bootbox replacement cover thingy (which looks sh*t anyway because somehow fine grit has got onto the paint and stuck there )

Went to go and try and sort out the hazard warning light/button thing, go to sit in the seat and by force of habit put one hand on the sill and one on the handbrake to help lower me in........ OH BUGGER!!!

Now I have a nice coating of black hammerite on my hand, tried my best to get it off but it's not shifting.

Any ideas??

or

Hot soap and water + Pummice stone. (Handy if you are planning a burglary in the near future, cos you won't leave any prints afterwards!)

Not got any pummice stone.

Swarfega has got a bit of it off so may just keep trying that for a while.

Meths, white spirit, terps (sp?) shoud all do it... hammerite thinners will probably be best.

don't hold yer lit cigarette with that hand for while though....

Blow torch and one of those paint scrapper things should sort it.

white spirit might shift it, but think you'll really need cellulose thinners, (probably what is in Hammerite's own thinner stuff). You'll need that to clean the brush too.

Try mixing sugar with the swarfega or with washing up liquid (ie Sugar Soap) it tends to work well.
or you could let it wear off (I'm sure there is a nob joke in this post for Podie but b-ggered if I can see it)

Bu**ger, don't have any white spirit, Dad must've pinched it for something.

I've been wondering why the white spirit hasn't been shifting the hammerite from the brush, will go and get some thinner stuff when one of the parents gets in from work.

Speaking from experience none of the solvents mentioned above will remove Hammerite very well, and in any case it's unwise to use them on your skin (BTDT says Mr Dermatitis). Hammerite's own brush cleaner is the only stuff of any use in removing Hammerite and I'd DEFINATELY not use that on my skin.

Best use the pummice stone route or one of those things made our of net curtain type stuff that old ladies make.

White spirit won't really work too well (voice of experience ) what you need is acetone - will dissolve just about any paint/resin - try nail varnish remover, that's usuallu just acetone with a bit of perfume.

Bu66er me is that stuff hard to shift!! Had my first experience with it the other day when I was painting some (ahem) shed hinges. Job done I went to clean the brush, white spirit? er no paint still on the brush water? some is coming off, hmm what about I agitate it with my hand...


It just got messier after that point and I decided to dump the paint brush and managed to remove the paint from hands with a nail brush.

Still traces of it around the sink though!

A blunt stanley knife blade can be used as a makeshift scraper to remove the accesible stuff on fingers etc...dont use a new one unless you want to paint the room a nice crimson color.
Usually swarfega with the little beads in it will shift it, but itll still take a couple of goes with a nail brush.
