I think the Porsche is more accomplished all round car compared to the Evo.
Porsche can do the topspeed and luxury stuff better than an Evo and would be right up there with the Evo point to point.
If cost comes into it the Evo regains some points though
I'd throw in a few of the Audi uber sedans as well, they fit somewhere in between those two.

Autocar did a test last year (or perhaps the year before) to establish exactly this fact - 996tt X50 won (but only just) against a Noble M400. This was on a wet road, I imagine the Noble may be slightly quicker (than the 996tt) in the dry. They stated that both were comfortably quicker than an EVO.

Yes. I also found that if you go round a left hand corner through a puddle without the doors on, the passenger gets quite wet somehow. Still havn't worked that one out, but being sprayed with muddy water isn't much fun...
I have driven an RS6 and it's very capable in the pouring rain.

Not a patch, not even in the same league. Besides you have missed the point, the 996tt isnt the most capable all weather pt 2 pt machine, it is the best car in the world, bar nothing and the EVO is a long long way short of that kind of tag.

So does this mean that the other weekend on a PH SW run, with Daz in his 996tt X50 and Paul in his Noble, and 'lil ol me chasing (and doing a good job of annoying both of them - catching through the corners too) in my 2.0l 16v GTi Golf, that my Golf is up there with the fastest cars in the world point to point?

No it just means you are a nutter with feck all regards for safety.
I seem to remember temps were approx zero, so defensive driving was the order of the day for some of us.

Surely all the lumps and bumps will prevent the porker from getting the most out of some of our roads though..
Yeah, the AYGO does seem pretty well put together and is infact designed to take small bumps (less than 10mph) with minimum damage and also be cheap to repair! Also, they have really 'fun' handling and you can nail it everywhere and never go too fast.. 30 feels like 50! –I’m seriously thinking about getting one.
I would encourage you to test drive one, there are a few surprises in store...
